German Hockey League DEL suspended because of Corona. No champion in 2020.

Someone got bit by a bat that nibble on a dirty pangolin in China and now the German Hockey League is suspended. The butterfly effect is real

It's more that the markets in Wuhan sold bats and the stomachs are fried and eaten...
Have they actually narrowed the origins down that far? I recall speculation a local could have entered a cave, get covered in bat guano, and then not clean up before returning to the market.
They are saying the virus jumped from bats to pangolins to humans.
This speculation is lowkey racist lol. No one knows what happened to start this, and the insinuation that people did this-or-that based on stereotypes/"knowledge" of cultures that aren't North American, shouldn't be taken as fact... We really shouldn't be spreading info like this.
It’s not. The DNA tracing was extremely consistent with bat coronaviruses when China first sequenced the genome
I always thought Vampires would be way cooler than this
Or somebody, not naming names, decided it was a good idea to pull an Ozzy and bite the bat themself. 4 SHAME
Ciri phased in and out near a rat while carrying a flea by the Catriona and now entire leagues are dying.
I thought it was cause a bat nibbled a pangolin which gave it to a human.
the only level 4 biosafety lab (most dangerous infectious diseases) in China, is in Wuhan.
This draft is going to be interesting if a bunch of leagues start suspending playoffs and U18s, World Championships and so on gets cancelled.
Could be a lot of later round steals.
Definitely, Finland has one of our strongest U18 teams ever and guys like Roni Hirvonen and Roby Järventie could have raised their stock a lot with good showings.
I thought Hirvonen should have made the U20 team. Sucks even more now, since there might not be a U18 tournament either.
Absolutely. Especially in retrospect because we lost Kupari due to injury and Hirvonen can play any forward position.
Going with 7 defenders out of the gate was idiotic
At this point I'd be shocked if it even happens anymore. They just cancelled the women's worlds when it was in Halifax.
These players have been scouted all year, fans overestimate how much short tournaments change opinions. Happened last year too with how people thought Cole Caufield should suddenly go top 5 because of his U18 performance.
Every single year players rise and fall throughout the draft. If suddenly March, April, May, and June are without any hockey, that’s 4/9 months taken out of these player’s draft year. It will most certainly effect later round picks.
Scouts have 95% of the hockey season worth of tape to work with, I think they’ll be fine.
Except they won’t have 95% of the hockey season if months are taken out, but feel free to believe that.
You're comparing a week long tournament with months of hockey
The league referred to in OP has played 51 games, plus the top prospects represented Germany at the WJC (Stutzle, Reichel, Peterka). I can assure you that while it was still something to scout, not having playoffs isn’t going to give incomplete profiles of these guys. They’ve seen them play enough to make full assessments of them going into the draft.
Also the comment I’m replying to refers heavily to those week long tournaments.
Translation via Google:
" DEL follows official recommendations / Playoffs 2020 will not take place / No German champions in the 2020/21 season
The German Ice Hockey League (DEL) is forced to end the current season early with immediate effect. The upcoming playoffs can no longer be held. The reason for this are the bans of various federal states, large events such as DEL games with more than 1000 spectators. The DEL also follows the official recommendations of Chancellor Angela Merkel and Minister of Health Jens Spahn, which have now been implemented in the official bans.
“We are extremely sorry for all clubs, partners and especially fans all over Germany that we have to make this decision. However, given the current developments, we have a duty to deal responsibly with the situation. We at DEL focus on the health of our fans, players and employees, ”said Gernot Tripcke, managing director of DEL.
Due to the premature end of the season, there is no German champion this year. As the main round winner, the EHC Red Bull Munich, together with the Adler Mannheim, the Straubing Tigers and the Eisbären Berlin, represents the DEL in the Champions Hockey League (CHL 2020/21). "
Germany has been particularly hit by COVID-19 lately, with 317 cases being confirmed yesterday for a total of 1112.
Background: German government advises to cancel all events with more than 1000 people attending. on average there are about 10000 spectators per match - depending on the club.
Instead of playing without audience, the playoffs, that should have started tomorrow, will be canceled. No champion will be elected for this year.
Based on your flair I can see this doesn't affect you regardless.
Well... it would be worse if the Haie would have reach the playoffs at the last possible moment 😁
From an economical perspective, we have clearly won the season
lmao gotta love Reddit roasting the Cologne Sharks on here. On the other hand... I absolutely hate this decision since my team directly made the quarters for the first time ever.
Have they given a reason for why they didn't play without fans? The small number of people in the arena wouldn't be much different than many work environments around the country
I'm assuming it's financial. The league isn't exactly wealthy, and it's the whole playoffs that would not make any money this way.
After all, no playoffs also means not travel, no referees, no people working at the arena, no need to light the arena...
exactly that, very little TV income through the shitty and impossible to watch Magenta TV deal, playing the games still but without an audience would have meant a substantial economical loss.
You guys new it since January, right? ;)
Maybe the North America media will now stop complaining about having their locker room access moved
Lol you want sports writers not to act self-important? Good luck
Who was complaining?
The Professional Hockey Writers Association.
Renaud Lavoie
Mike Harrington.
I dont get it. Cant they just play and broadcast it on TV?
I really done get the "no fans" completely ruins it. Isn't it better to have a game than no game?
I guess for some (maybe most) leagues it just doesn't make financial sense?
Correct
Yup. These teams don't have multi-billionaires bankrolling them who can afford to take these hits and those leagues don't have massive TV deals, they are very much gate driven.
one of the players is infected on one of the teams right now
that player will transfer the virus to other players BEFORE the symptoms show on the first player
this is really simple stuff that children can comprehend but if a team owner can't figure it out then they deserve what they get
hockey players arent "better" than other athletes, at avoiding a new virus strain infecting people globally lol
So what? None of us should go to work and do anything?!!?

The studies being released show its massively contagious before the person shows symptoms. So you spread it and then you find out you are sick...
http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/03/study-highlights-ease-spread-covid-19-viruses
The nine patients, who were admitted to the same Munich hospital, were studied because they had had close contact with an index case. Cell cultures and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were done on throat swabs and samples of sputum, stool, blood, and urine. Throat swabs showed very high viral shedding during the first week of symptoms.
The findings contrasted starkly with those from the 2003 outbreak of SARS in terms of viral load. "In SARS, it took 7 to 10 days after onset until peak RNA concentrations (of up to 5x105 copies per swab) were reached," the researchers wrote. "In the present study, peak concentrations were reached before day 5, and were more than 1,000 times higher."
We can't avoid work or even all crowds for 6 months but people at the very least need to start being aware how likely they are to spread and catch this in large crowds right now.
the known infected Player doesent play in the DEL. He plays in the seconde highst german League the DEL 2. They have suspended their Play Offs aswell
yeah because the Munich studies of the virus show how highly concentrated the viral load is BEFORE symptoms show in the infected person

You see the doctor discuss it on Joe Rogan today, it's going to be 6 months before this virus stops infecting people
He's not infected, it's still a suspected case only. They're still awaiting test results.

I think the smaller teams can't compensate their losses. Some of the club's in our league are always on the edge to bankruptcy
RIP my precious Hamburg Freezers.
That RIP happened a while ago :D
And yet it still hurts lol.
At least I still have their sweater. Might be the only one in America with one of those lol.
:)
I might be the only person in America with a Freezers Jersey, but damn I'm proud of it.
I remember I would always make custom leagues in the NHL games and build the Freezers into a dynasty.
The teams make up to 80% of their income by admissions, so no specators would be financial suicide
They could play at adult league rinks if the ops costs were the issue, but maybe they couldn't even make the cost of the player salaries.
I'd imagine in leagues like the DEL revenue is much more dependant on ticket sales than TV broadcasts
I don't have the source right now, but TV broadcasting rights are only like 300.000€ per season per team. That is not much, even for the DEL.
One team publically announced they didn't want to go far in the playoffs because it cost so much money. And then there are two other clubs on the verge of bankruptcy, one because a sponsor regened on the sponsorship and the other because the main sponsor isn't renewing their contract. There is a reason why they have so many ads on their jerseys, they need the money that much.
You still risk teams traveling together from city to city, and being in close proximity to each other. Most of the large companies that my friends and I work for has already halted all business travel. Better safe than sorry.
I imagine TV numbers for hockey in Germany aren't good enough to justify playing games without fans.
No it isn't. Playoffs without supporters would be pointless.
This means Adler Mannheim successfully defended their title 💪💪💪💪😛😂🎊
Und köln hat alles richtig gemacht dieses Jahr 🤟
Or they lost to Red Müll since Red Müll was top the table.
Stop right there
Considering the situation that's probably the right decision.
In Finland they will definitely play through the season in Liiga since the situation isn't as bad yet and the regular season ends this week.
I am doubtful of the playoffs happening though. They might just crown regular season winner as the champion
im so sad rn. had playoff tickets and was so pumped to see bremerhaven in the quarter finals. historic season, first time reaching the quarters directly and not via pre playoffs. fuck man. this sucks.
That's the first thing I thought of, you guys and Straubing. Playing the regular season of their lives and not having the chance to experience playoff hockey
Fade me already buddy
It's comin' folks.
On one hand it is quite sad, but on the other hand it makes a lot of sense and shows responsibility.
And we have the beneficial situation of a finished season, while the Playy-Offs haven't started yet. Bad blood and envy can be dodged.
Und uns interessiert es eh nicht, weil wir es aufgrund so einer bestimmten Negativ Serie nicht in die Playoffs geschafft haben
Good. If anybody is upset about any sort of event cancellation at this point then they're part of the problem, in my eyes. It's been proven so far that proactivity will at least cause the outbreak to at least reach a somewhat manageable level for healthcare systems. Assuming that we are able to get things reasonably under control, the world will keep turning in 2021 and you'll be able to watch your hockey in person then. Until then I'll be enjoying it from the comfort of my own home.
Totally agree. The comments on the DEL Instagram page are insane right now. People cursing the league and calling it "a virus less dangerous than the flu". Bunch of wankers. I'd rather see me team try and defend the title too, but in those circumstances it's the responsible thing to do.
Ignorance, misinformation, selfishness, and normalcy bias. Unfortunately, many people are unable to examine a situation like this from outside their own worldview - if it doesn't affect them, they don't care, and when it DOES threaten their day-to-day life, they become scared and angry instead of becoming informed and empathetic. We've become so used to having what we want when we want it. And yeah, I get the attitude behind wanting your country and team to win things, but I don't personally give a shit about sports in comparison to the safety and health of the general public, especially in a crisis like this that can, ultimately, affect me and my loved ones.
Oh shit
DEL and DEL2 are done.
But anything else is still open, it seems. My hometown team (3rd league/ Oberliga) is playing the determining match of the pre-playoffs right now.
This comment didn't age well.
Hopefully this gets the world to start paying attention to sanitation and food safety. This shit was invented 150 years and and we have major players on the world stage that aren't following it.
More likely the world is going to pay attention to China specifically. I think they're going to question China and their role in this global world and global economy.
I was going to be in munich during what could have been the week of the finals. I was really looking forward to possibly catching a finals game.
Damn.
The same thing is probably happening in Denmark
1918/9 all over again. Ye boi
Or everyone is a champion including each and every one of us - glass half full
FADE ME
Reigning champion for another year!!!
[deleted]
You are probably refering to Tim Stützle playing for Adler Mannheim. AFAIK his season is over now, offchance he gets loaned to another club but I doubt it.
I'm pretty sure Moritz Seider will be getting a call up pretty soon in Detroit.
https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2020/03/05/detroit-red-wings-moritz-seider-sighting/4964532002/
Why would he get called up when the Griffins are right in the playoff hunt? They're a game or 2 from being out
What does any of this have to do with the comment you replied to?
