Impressive Achievement

UW basketball is about to accomplish an inconceivable feat. This will be the third time in the last ten years that their team will miss the tournament while having TWO first round picks on their team. There was also the year they had a losing record while having the number one pick in the draft.

At what point should people call for Hopkins to be fired? He has at least a bit of leeway after winning the conference last year, but this season was completely unacceptable, and I don't expect the team to be much better next year.

For that matter, when should Cohen be put on the hot seat? Petersen basically hired himself, and the Hopkins hire she made is not the slam dunk people anointed it as. The ADs offices lack of prep for the OC search was frankly embarrassing as well. They only held THREE INTERVIEWS. Lazy. That's why we are stuck with Donovan.

To imply Cohen needs to be on the hot seat is lunacy, negligent and short sighted, to say the least. She has done fantastically well as the AD and honestly, she can stay as long as she wants to be here.

Hopkins is fine and basketball will be fine. You have down years occasionally. The problem with this season was that we had elite athletes, not necessarily elite basketball players. Stewart has nothing left to show and will be a lottery pick. McDaniels, though, really needs another year if only to figure out how to play well with others. Too many times this season he exhibited poor body language when faced with a challenge or didn’t have the ball in his hands as much as he’s probably used to. He’s not going to stay because the athleticism he’s shown at times is elite and what the NBA wants.

Find a squad of guys who can play together consistently and the results will be better. Having lottery picks is cool but I’d rather see a team that gels and fires on all cylinders with great basketball players rather than elite athletes.

I will start with Hopkins. I am not saying to fire him now, but I think you can make the argument that he should be on the hot seat next year. The team didn't have "elite basketball players", who's fault is that? These are almost all Hopkins guys. He is responsible for not putting together a proper roster. We had sweet 16 level talent and got LAST in the league. We got beat twice by WSU!

On to Cohen. The statement: "She can stay as long as she wants." is a big fucking problem. NO ONE in our athletic department should get that much leeway. I am also curious as to what exactly you think her accomplishments are, because I'm at a loss.

Do you have any idea what the primary responsibilities of an AD are? I’ll spell them out and provide examples.

-Hiring coaches: Petersen, retaining Lake to provide continuity, Hopkins. Heather Tarr was extended to make sure softball is top notch. Meggs was extended given what he’s been able to do with baseball compared to the history of the program (it’s been dogshit).

-procuring equipment and apparel: ditching Nike for Adidas and getting a huge deal in the process.

-Promoting Events: not sure you’ve noticed but the quality of social media surrounding games, schedules and communications has drastically improved since Woodward and Emmert.

-Facilities: Husky Stadium is better maintained. HecEd gets attention that it sure didn’t when I was a student in the late 00’s. Football got its locker rooms updated to keep up with recruiting needs.

In addition to that she places an emphasis on academics we haven’t seen in ages. Our student athletes are graduating at a 91% rate! 91%! Six teams have perfect scores. Football is at 90%. It’s above the NCAA averages and well above the PAC-12 schools that aren’t Stanford. Cal was at 85. Øregøn at 80.

So yeah, I’m thrilled with what Cohen is doing and how she’s going about her job.

Hell yeah. Cohen is great. I love that she has created a culture where academics is just as important as athletics.

Would you happen to work in the AD office?

Not even close. I work in healthcare IT.

Ugh. You don’t fire a coach one year after winning a conference title and a tournament game.

Hopkins lost four starters. It was a stretch to think this team was going to just walk back into the tournament. I did expect them to win at least 20 games.

Hopkins is experiencing growing pains. He’s never been a head coach before. He did fine with low expectations and Romars experienced players but now he will have to prove he can prove a program. I give him at least four years to do that.

Four years?! We reside in one of the best areas for youth basketball development in the country. We should be a tournament team every year AT A MINIMUM. Oregon was hot garbage at basketball for decades, and now they are a power. Why? Because they give a shit and have higher standards. If Hop finishes bottom third in the league next year he should be gone, and that is being generous.

What solid nba players have come out of the PNW in the past 10 years?

Zach Lavine... Dejonte Murray... The Porter brothers ... that’s about it and the last two barely count. Theybulle might get there.

Compare that to 2000-2010 where we had Brandon Roy, Spencer Hawes, Nate Robinson, Isaiah Thomas, Kevin Love, Terrence Ross and Terrence Jones.

Oregon is a powerhouse every year? You realize in 2018 they didn’t make the NCAA tournament right?

You make it sound like you have no idea what you are talking about.

The Seattle area has produced a TON of top level college basketball recruits, just because they aren't all NBA stars doesn't mean they can't be productive, high end, college players.

Oregon Missed in 2018, mostly due to injuries. Also in the last 5 years they have made the tournament 4 times, won the Pac-12 3 times, the Pac-12 tournament twice, made the sweet sixteen, the elite eight, and the final four. That is pretty fucking impressive for how garbage Pac-12 basketball has been. Obviously they aren't Duke, but they have accomplished as much in 5 years than we have in our program history.

1
RedeemedbythaBlood•

Top rated recruits yes. Top players? Not really. The ones that went elsewhere other than Gary Bell in 2011 not many were stars. Anrio Adams did nothing at Kansas. Shaqaan Aaron washed out at Louisville.

You excuse Oregon in 2018 but did you consider quade green probably played a role in our bad season.

Oregon has taken advantage of a down pac 12.

As for Cohen your post is just dumb. Petersen didn’t hire himself he turned down numerous schools including USC. She didn’t let jimmy lake get away.

She fired Roman which took balls. And even if he was fired tomorrow. The Hopkins hire was a success.

Blaming her for Kellen Moore’s decision is just stupid. It’s pretty clear Lake zeroed in on Moore then chose Donovan. I doubt she is the one who made us settle. Most ADs give their coaches a budget and let them figure it out themselves.

The general consensus with Petersen was after he got his shit pushed in by a terribly coached Sark team he saw the potential that UW had. He was ready to leave Boise and when the job came open he had his camp reach out to the UW people. He turned down the USC job because it would have been a terrible fit for him.

She didn't let Jimmy Lake get away. I guess? She ok'ed the raises, but it was Coach K who kept Jimmy here by giving him the Co-DC title and letting him call plays.

Firing Romar was definitely the right call and should have been done years ago. Any competent AD SHOULD have done the same thing, but I will give her some credit here.

I don't blame her for Kellen's decision, I blame her for not interviewing more candidates, she put ALL of our eggs in that basket, and it was obvious he was the only person they were willing to shell out a competitive salary for. Jimmy was busy taking over a program in transition, implementing his culture and assuring the 2020 class of recruits that everything will still be great. He chose Donovan out of a discount bin of washed up coaches. Cohen also RETAINED BOB GREGORY! We started Kyler Manu for every game this season and Bob somehow has a job still.

I get that it has been ages since UW has had a good AD, so someone who has made a couple good decisions and has been here during a successful time in football and basketball will be praised. The thing is, she hasn't actually done anything successful by her own merit and has caused a lot of problems. Look at our women's basketball team, they made the final 4 a few years ago, and now they are a laughing stock. That was HER hire. There was also the volleyball player who got sexually assaulted by a senior member of the athletic department and she just let him leave and swept it under the rug.

-1
RedeemedbythaBlood•

ADs don’t hire assistant coaches. Head coaches do. If jimmy lake didn’t want Gregory he would have fired him.

Her women’s basketball coach ditched her for another school. That happens.

You seem to be grasping at straws kinda sad man

1
King__RolloOP•

The AD absolutely gets to decide who gets hired and fired. The AD put pressure on Pete to fire Bush halfway through this season. THEY KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN and still did none of the leg work to set Jimmy up for success.

Ok, so the coach leaves... who's job is it to hire the next coach?! Have some standards! There is no reason UW can't be the best at every sport. To have some of your most visible programs do this poorly is an embarrassment.

I'm curious why people are so quick to defend this athletic department, is it because we are afraid things will get worse? I get it. We sucked at football for a LONG time, but that took gross incompetence by multiple administrations. Cohen is definitely a step up from that, but we should demand the best.

What would you say Cohen's greatest accomplishments are?

-1
RedeemedbythaBlood•

Her best accomplishment is ditching Nike for adidas.

Hiring Petersen who took us to three NY6 bowls in a row including our first rose bowl in 17 years

Getting us back to the NCAA tournament by hiring Hopkins when Romar was going nowhere

Programs have cycles. That’s college sports - quit your bitching and enjoy the ride.

Our men’s basketball program is not elite. I expect to make the NCAA tournament most years and I don’t feel Hopkins is incapable of that.
