Podcasts for Progressive Christians?

Pastor here. I am assembling a list of resources for my congregation who will be staying home during the coronavirus crisis. I am a big fan of Krista Tippett‘s podcast On Being and so will be recommending it. What other podcasts might my people enjoy listening to—and why?

The Liturgists. theologians and guests discuss topics such as LGBTQ issues, spiritual abuse, deconstructing beliefs, women's roles in the church with various perspectives and scriptural study but ultimately they're affirming and thoughtful.

I'm not sure if this fits what you're looking for, but I run a show called A Christian Reads the Tao te Ching. I've found that this little ancient book of Chinese wisdom and spirituality didn't draw me away from a Christ-centered faith, but actually helped me hold onto it. It is not a religious text in the way that some people think; it's more of a philosophical one.

If your audience likes Richard Rohr, then there's a good chance they would love this show. So much of what he says resonates deeply with the TTC.

The show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or any other streaming service or on my blog at the link above.

Two recommendations that may be slightly off the mark:

The Magnificast is a podcast about Christianity and leftist politics. It’s more “radical” than “progressive” and it goes more into the intersection between Christianity and critical theory than theology but it’s my favorite Christian podcast and the hosts are great.

I’ve been filling my time by listening to The History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps. It’s not a Christian podcast but there are over a hundred episodes on Christianity in late antiquity and the medieval period. There’s also a phenomenal section on philosophy in the Islamic world.

  1. You Have Permission

  2. Bad Christian

Bad Christian started me down the "slippery slope" and actually helped me find the You Have Permission podcast. YHP helped me realize there were other translations and understandings of the bible. So I went from a Assemblies of God conservative to more of a progressive Christian but I don't really know what to identify as.

Bad Christian is probably not exactly what you are looking for because they are very sarcastic and do curse quite a bit. But I will say in their later years is when they started being more progressive.

YHP is probably more of what you are looking for here is the description cause i am lazy. So many of us have been given bad answers to good questions -- questions about God, suffering, prayer, fate, science, justice, and more -- often by people with pure intentions. But we needn't stop with those pat answers. You have permission to take both Christianity and the modern world very seriously, and this podcast will introduce you to people from across the Christian spectrum engaging these timeless and difficult questions in various ways.

It's slightly different that what you're looking, but I like listening to the podcast Good Christian Fun. It's hosted by two ex-evangelical millennial comedians who try to discuss Christian pop culture from the past few decades from a more progressive angle. It's way more comedy than theology and is a little crude and blue (might actually not be the best suggestion for your congregation) but I like hearing them unpack some of the strange Christian media that I was raised with.

Real Christianity by Dale and Veronica Partridge, they cover so many interesting topics and always back everything up with scripture. Their big focus is teaching people what the Bible actually says and not being influenced by the culture.
