Non-Political YouTubers that are good for a quarantine.

Last year there was a really good thread about youtubers that arn't pieces of shit. And it had some great recommendations. https://www.reddit.com/r/BreadTube/comments/bfe2cg/nonpolitical_youtubers_that_arent_pieces_of_shit/ I though it would be fun to do something like that again. There had been a few really interesting history youtubers that I really liked but then it turns out they were total chuds.

From the other thread there are a huge number of good choices but a few that stand out as absolute joys to the soul.

  • Jenny Nicholson makes absolutely wonderful videos. Mostly reviews and script doctoring bits but she doesn't shy away from calling out bigoted nonsense in what she is talking about. Her reading fanfic is something you need in your life.
  • Kurzgesagt has great production values, and is fantastic pop-science. While not all of their videos are perfect they did do corrections on two they felt were missteps and getting better is important.
  • Girlfriend Reviews is just a girl watching her boyfriend play games and talking about them. But they are always upbeat and clearly having fun.
  • Numberphile is a personal fav. Watching these people talk about math in such a joyous way and truly appreciate the beauty found in the field is healing. Especially Cliff Stoll (the klien bottles) and James Grime whose enthusiasm is so infectious.
  • Also Numberphile2 channel has wonderful long form interviews, and learning they people got into math is just so interesting.
  • Townsends is quite wholesome. I first saw him explode because his fried chicken recipe video explode on reddit but
  • Sexplanations is so wholesome. Dr. Lindsey Doe is so joyous about sex. Always educating and always enthusiastic. I just want to type wholesome like 100 times because she is. It is so rare that you see sex anything that contains no shame, even in liberal/leftist spaces. So much of sex talk is around trauma or pain or inequality, which are important, but if that is the only time you talk about sex it still creates an association. You also need to talk about sex in a fun wholesome environment. She also has Amp from Watts The Safeword on and he is also quite fun to watch.

Other shout outs that are good that may have been overlooked and not usually posted here.

  • https://arstechnica.com/video/series/war-stories Just people talking about how they made games in the old days.
  • Small Beans is Micheal Swaim and some others post cracked work.
  • Phelan Porteous another channel awesome person, sometimes works with ...
  • Allison Pregler who does a lot of fun videos about not great movies and tv but is just very positive about it. I just like seeing bad movies get dunked on but not in a mean vindictive petty way.
  • PushinUpRoses talks about Goosebumps, Are You Afraid Of The Dark, Murder She Wrote, retro adventure games, does some art and is very wholesome.
  • MarzGurl Has a you tube, twitch streams, helped push an abuser out of the amine con circuit. Haven't watched her a lot but is still pretty solid.

Sideways - videos about music and movie soundtracks. Some of my fave vid's include "How silent films invented the sound track" and "How a super hero theme works".

Ask a mortician if you're interested in death, death rituals, death in cultures around the world and cool corpses

The crafsman steady craftin.

He is like the Bob Ross of fixing old star wars toys and making neat found object art in your garage

That might do double duty then. Watch a vid then get inspired to try some stuff.

I'm a big fan of Be Kind Rewind. Still 'political' but closer to someone like Lindsay Ellis. Does video essays about film history and the Oscars in particularly through the lens of how they've treated women and minorities and the historical context behind these attitudes. I love it equally as a channel for appreciating old movies I think are under-discussed on the internet, and for doing so from a really socially and politically progressive lens.

If you like film history as well I recently discovered a little channel I really love called Gold Souls which just talks about vintage movies and music in a really comfy vlog format. The creator's q&a video made it clear she was socially progressive and was very adamant about not wanting to erase the bad politics of artists from previous generations while still being able to enjoy their work, as well as celebrating the achievements of minority artists.

Stuff about classic Hollywood is always worth watching.

Thorshighheels does some interesting videos about video games and jrpgs but examining final fantasy character designs over the years and why some homophobic gamers disliked them.

He's so underrated! I also kinda get the feeling he's left leaning since he makes fun of ben shapiro in one of his other videos on media criticism

So good Youtubers, okay:

Jackson Crawford does videos on Norse mythology and language, used to teach the subject at three different universities and it shows in his expertise. I don't know where he leans politically (possibly conservative), but he has made explicitly clear that he doesn't tolerate racists and alt-righters.

Matt Easton of Scholagladiatoria is probably the best person out there to learn about historical (European) weapons, armor and martial arts. He also keeps his politics under wraps, and while he has in the past associated with the likes of Lindybeige, he himself has never displayed tendencies in that direction. He had a questionable take regarding the British Empire and the responsibility of modern people towards it, but other than that nothing that I'm aware of.

Tod's Workshop is a very similar channel (medieval weapons and armor). I'd especially recommend the 30-minute video where he tests how plate armor holds up against an English longbow.

Trey the Explainer does videos about biology, anthropology, cryptids and made one very good video where he goes into great detail as to why being gay is perfectly natural.

Overly Sarcastic Productions is probably cheating since they're at least Breadtube-adjacent and one of them participated in the Shakespeare-Stream. The channel is split between videos about history and literature/mythology/other media, and while the history stuff can sometimes be a little inaccurate and one-sided, but still very much worth checking out.

Another Breadtube-adjacent channel is Miracle of Sound, a one-man music project with songs centered around pop culture (mostly video games). The guy behind it was on a podcast with Jim Sterling for several years and has written some of my all-time favourite songs.

And, because third time's the charm: Dice Funk is a DnD podcast that basically oozes leftist viewpoints and LGBT+ representation. It's also super funny and engaging. Also if you watch Renegade Cut or listen to Jim Sterling's podcasts you might hear a familiar voice or two. I especially recommend seasons three, five and six (they're all self-contained), but all of it is good.

Noah caldwell gervais is fantastic and the best gaming youtube creator period. His travel Videos are also incredible and make me want to get in my car and drive everytime I watch one. As a bonus most of his videos are rather long too so it's just something good to have on in the background.

good to see one old r/tgwtg folks such as PUR and Alison thriving. Todd In the Shadows isn't perfect but he's a good one

4
SysfinOP•

There is a surprising number of them that are keeping on, and now that I got curious Brandon Tenold a horror reviewer I found about a year ago also got his start there. And Diamanda Hagan is still reviewing and has two great series on Dr Who and another series about Red Dwarf.

1
Rocabelle•

The Rap Critic is also another former tgwtg dude who makes really cool content now

1
thotslime•

Todd in the Shadows desperately needs to learn how to do audio. Idk how he's gone on so long with the worst audio levels from any YouTuber at 300k subscribers. When he's talking my volume has to be at 100, then the music starts and I have to immediately drop the audio to 10 lest I blow out my speakers.

Other shout outs that are good that may have been overlooked and not usually posted here.

Phelan Porteous

Allison Pregler

PushinUpRoses

MarzGurl

You are literally just listing old ThatGuyWithTheGlasses creators lol Good to know Marzgurl is still around though.

3
SysfinOP•

I actually had no idea PushingUpRoses was from there. I just found her like four months ago.

2
TheEndlessDreams•

Yeah I "rediscovered" her recently as well with her Clue video being randomly recommended by youtube.

Honestly, as shitty as TGWTG ended up being, I still have very happy nostalgic feelings towards it, I loved that website when I was younger.

2
SysfinOP•

Its ridiculous how many of my favorite creators started there but I never really got wind of till channel awesome was on its slide down. Like I found it after I discovered via Spoony but by that time he hadn't been there for over a year. And only really started watching MarzGurl in the last year or so.

2
TheEndlessDreams•

Damn, spoony is a name I haven't heard in years, last time I checked he had a full mental meltdown and stopped making videos.

I remember looking up a bunch of old creators when the ChangeTheChannel thing happened, I honestly didn't expect AngryJoe to end up being the most successful of any of the creators.

Also JesuOtaku transitioned, his retrospective and analysis of what made the original Digimon Adventure awesome is still one of my favourite things that ever came out of that website.

2

Food Wishes the Bob Ross of cooking shows.

Matthew Colville makes amazing DnD videos and livestreams on twitch. plus he's a socialist.

Tom Scott creates in depth videos about different really fascinating things

Tier Zoo makes videos about the animal kingdom using gamer dialect

3

I'd be a bit careful about Kurzgesagt. While they're usually ok, their Bill and Melinda gates foundation videos can be pretty suspect.

Wrestling With Wregret. Hosted by Brian Zane, this channel is (as you’ve probably guessed) dedicated to making videos on professional wrestling.

2

Movement for Climbers is a very relaxing channel focused on fitness in relation to rock climbing. But it's so positive and really dives into understanding and connecting with the way your body is structured and moves without getting into any toxic ideas about body shape or image.

Film Joy I'm sure most of us have stumbled upon already. Mikey Newman is great and his thoughts about movies are great and I wish my hair looked as good as his always does.

Rex Krueger is a woodworker in Ohio (?). I've linked, specifically, his playlist "Woodworking For Humans" because it's good, informative and approachable. If you've been kinda thinking about a hobby you can pick up in the corner of your apartment, this could be it. I doubt Rex is a leftist. And he doesn't get political in these videos. But he makes good woodworking videos for human beings to watch.

2
Rocabelle•

Ladyknightthebrave makes some excellent film/ TV essays with sharp insights and editing (her one on MASH is especially good)
Dominic Noble does Lost in Adaptation, a review show where he compares movies and shows to their book counterparts

Quinn Curio is a smaller creator with some great essays on Umbrella Academy and Gotham if your into funny yet informative takes

Errant Signal - videos about (mostly indie) games

Ahoy - long form documentaries about retro games and guns

3blue1brown - videos about math topics. He also did most of the Khan academy multivariable calculus videos

PBS Space Time - astrophysics and particle physics

Internet Shaquille - short cooking vlogs

Fredrick Knudsen - videos about obscure internet history

I'm editing in ones as I think of them

Internet Comment Etiquette funny videos with a dude making ridiculous comments on the internet.

Stop Skeletons From Fighting Super informative videos on games and other things related to gaming. Him and Producer Grace are also pretty outright lefty (or at least liberal) on Twitter.

Jim Fucking Sterling Son Videos on the game industry and other things. I guess he is political but who cares he does some really good stuff. His commentocracy videos are some of my favorites. Thank God for Jim.

NileRed Dude does a bunch of cool science shit that's way over my head but are still fun to watch.

Brutal Moose Hilarious game reviews, movie reviews and other things like badly making food or trying shitty Banquet pot pies.

coldcrashpictures Film reviews and film analysis. Definitely lefty and uses that for some of his analysis.

I did a thing Videos where a guy does a thing. Usually weird, crazy and whatnot. Makes pizza cutter skates, uses red hot chains to cut through meat Mortal Kombat style and uses old milk bottles to make knives.

Low Spec Gamer Does videos on how to optimize all sorts of games to run on low end hardware. Also does low end builds and in general shows that you can easily do PC gaming on a small budget unlike everything r/pcmasterrace will tell you.

Hard4Games Just a couple of dudes that are so hard for games. They look at prototype consoles, beta games and other rare game stuff you'd never see normally.

Strange Aeons Videos on internet culture (like vulture culture and others) and also occasionally reviewing Onision's horrible "books".

That's about all of the amazing ones and my favorite videos from them that I can think of.

2
nopantsjimmy•

I really like Scott the Woz' videos. He mostly does stuff on video games with a more surreal sense of humor. He's pretty fond of Nintendo and covers both a lot of newer releases as well as retro titles

2

What's so Great About That? is a criminally underrated art review/analysis channel
