  1. What do you think of Hugo's descriptions of war and the people involved?

Your final line version there makes me so glad that I’m reading Rose’s version - “you were reserved for French bullets, poor man!”

Which begs the question, was that man killed by fratricide?

Also I can’t decide if I love Hugo’s long, long lists or if I hate them (you know, the ones that are loads of clauses in a sentence which is huge)

So far it's been the only weird line in my reading, I like your choosen translation much better.

Fratricide seems very much implied.

Certain sections are very cinematic feeling, while others can be a bit foggy and tedious, at least in my translation. At times it reads like the book of Genesis or something, with the extensive lists of names. I'm certainly ready to get back to our cast, but I'm also willing to be patient and ride this wave Hugo has us on. I'm sure it pays off.

Yeah It's been cool and all but I'm about ready for some Jean Valjean!

I'm loving the doomed men's loyalty. They are coming around to retreating (slowly but surely).

If I didn't know why, I think I would be annoyed, but I know the larger story. As River Song would say, "Spoilers."

Every one knows the rest

Again! Speak for yourself, Hugo.
