I don’t know how much they were testing.
probably bc their population density is lower, less spreading
Because they aren’t testing. How do people not understand this concept?
It appears they are testing: https://www.countyofnapa.org/2776/COVID-19-Testing
It's just a really low number so far: (92) https://insight.livestories.com/s/v2/new-story/c0872bae-6127-4036-aea4-ad779a801a71
That’s my point
The virus doesn't spread through apartment walls.
It's not population density it's how people react to the information. Look at Taiwan Singapore and Hong Kong - far more contact with China and much higher population density than most of the world and very few cases.
If your default is “walk to my enclosed garage, drive to the Starbucks drive thru, drive to work, drive to the store, drive back to my enclosed garage” you’re going to have a much lower spreading than “walk to the bus stop, transfer to Bart, walk to my cafe, walk to work, take the bus to the grocery store, take Bart back home”.
Assuming that nobody makes any effort to control this at all that sounds reasonable but it's not obviously true. Infection can still happen at the store or at work. I lived in NYC and didn't get sick any more often than when I lived here. But my point is that people are making efforts to control it and those efforts are all that matter.
Aside, even for flu which we don't quarantine for density isn't the leading cause of disease:
Epidemic intensity (or the peak level of infections) is actually higher in cities with smaller populations, less residential crowding and lower incomes, co-author Benjamin Dalziel tells Axios.
Densely populated, upper-income, larger cities, on the other hand, showed lower epidemic intensity despite being a "transmission hub." While infection rates were higher overall, they were spread out over a longer period of time, enabling the health care system to respond better, Dalziel says.
As for Napa vs. the rest of the the area:
“walk to my enclosed garage, drive to the Starbucks drive thru, drive to work, drive to the store, drive back to my enclosed garage”
That's most of the South Bay. Napa's numbers are probably lower today because they aren't testing and are less connected to Wuhan.
Granted all three took extreme measures.
South Korea and Taiwan's measures are less extreme than what we're dealing with. They were just far more effective at testing and quarantined on a case by case basis instead of shutting down businesses en masse
And cultural differences with masks
This right here!!
We are taking a brute force approach and throwing the economy off a cliff for a disease with a 3% death rate. Mostly because our healthcare infrastructure is horrifically antiquated and run by people who prefer to practice medicine with pen and paper.
Our leadership is appallingly poor.
I guess the virus stopped for wine tasting first before continuing on
And I'm hearing the second case is now confirmed:
(NAPA, CALIF.) Napa County Public Health confirmed a second local case of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Napa County. The first case in a Napa County resident was confirmed earlier in the day.
Napa County Public Health Officials are conducting their investigation. Due to medical privacy requirements and to protect identity, further information about this case will not be released at this time. The County will provide general updates when and as appropriate. The patient is in isolation and Public Health staff are working to identify close contacts.
“With the increase in testing, finding additional cases is not unexpected”, said Dr. Karen Relucio, Napa County’s Public Health Officer. “It is critical that people who develop respiratory symptoms stay at home and isolate themselves from others, even if they still feel well enough to go out. As a community, we need to act now to slow the spread of the virus.”
Took them a while, maybe wine is a coronavirus inhibitor?
Clearly more research is required. For science.
I’m currently working on it
For science
(Bets on how long for someone to come tell me it’s an immune system suppressant)
ITs an ImmUnE sYsTem SuPresSaNt
If I could afford Reddit gold you’d get it my friend
I drank a bottle of Almond Sparkling last night. I feel great. Guys, it works.
Inhibitor to getting more people tested there?
Resveratrol is, potentially
