It's been over a decade since NIN went to instrumental ambient electronica, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I still like NIN's third-and-fourth-wave Industrial stuff considerably better.
While I do think the motivation for the change was an artistic one (a perceived need to grow and develop as an artist), it was also a very smart commercial decision. The change keeps NIN "relevant" in the eyes of the music press, and more or less reinvented Trent Reznor as a major film soundtrack composer almost overnight. That, and it keeps him from being pigeonholed by people outside of NIN's original target demographic as "that edgy burnout whose schtick used to be 'the big thing' in the '90s" (like Marilyn Manson).
I think Trent reached his peak during The Fragile/Still in terms of sound design and creativity and quality in general. Post-WT NIN is not as fascinating as his previous work. I think that by sticking with working only with Atticus Ross, the songs started sounding too similar.
But like you said, his soundtrack work gave him the opportunity to be more than a nostalgia act from the 90s and Trent is still if not more respected than he ever was before (not that it matters much, but Manson comes to mind and the poor dude is a joke at this point).
And for doing things like releasing this for free out of nowhere, it's impossible for me not to say Trent is my favorite artist out there. His respect for the fanbase in unmatched.
Nothing will ever top The Fragile. There were some cool surprises on the last few EPs he put out. His instrumental/soundtrack stuff reminds me a lot of later era Coil, which I'm a huge fan of.
Still is my favorite. Hard to pick a definite favorite, but my god, every single track on it is great.
It wasn’t always my favorite though.
Honestly, I think Manson could have done worse to stay relevant. His last couple records produced by Tyler Bates don't sound exactly like he's trying to rehash the '90s.
The Pale Emperor is a fucking great record. But in general he became a parody of himself and the guy seriously needs help.
Most people would disagree with me I think, but I actually really like his work on How To Destroy Angels. In a weird way, I think it's the most NIN-like thing he's done in years. It's not as heavy or aggressive as NIN but it's just as noisy, experimental, and dissonant as any of his early work. It just feels more....adventurous than anything NIN has done since The Fragile. Songs like "BBB" or "Welcome Oblivion" have a very Broken-Downward Spiral era feel to instrumentals with a glitch-analog twist. It's actually some pretty out there stuff.
I would do certain things for another HTDA album and tour.

I go back to NIN once every 2-3 years...everything after Fragile I'm ambivalent about, mainly because With Teeth was so ordinary. Rockin', but ordinary.
Seems like ever since he teamed with Atticus Ross he lost the innovation, intricacy and nuance of his earlier work. I can listen to The Fragile or TDWS and hear little details and things buried in the background of the songs...samples, guitars and synths that add to the structure and meat of the songs. These things are mostly gone now. The songs are simplistic and boring to me.
That's pretty much my view -even though he tries to keep it sounding organic there's something lost as he's nailed his formula. He's more prolific but at what cost? He'll never be 'bad' imho but he will lose a lot of that aura and mystery.
