I rarely seem to beat the deer. Found this stand that was taller than most and had some young tops. I boiled them for 5-8 minutes until they wilted and tender, but they were unpalatably bitter. I'm confident of the ID, just wonder if I found a particularly bitter example.

That's unusual, I have never ate a Greenbrier that tasted bitter but yes your ID is definitely correct.
