What does this mean? Didn’t we already decide to adopt the opt in pass/fail?

nbsoftwareOP•

This means that the SGA recommends that the university reconsider and revise their existing grading policy (which was announced yesterday afternoon). The SGA itself has no power to change the grading, so the current system is still in place.

25
laleyt00•

Has the SGA been historically influential? It seems unlikely that the university would change the grading policy (since they just announced it yesterday)

Edit: I just browsed thru the past reddit posts about our SGA and the general consensus is that they are weak and useless lol

Lol the whole thing is an illusion

It’s true that the university has often acted unilaterally in the past. I’m hopeful that this will change with the transitions coming in the next few months, though!

bruh what... no employer will accept grades from a double A grading policy

24
DeltaHex106CS '21•

In reality, employers rarely care about your gpa. Its all about how competent you are and how well you can work with people. Gpa only gets you so far.

16
[deleted]•

That’s not true. They use gpa as a resume screening. If two people handed the same resume and one had a 3.7 gpa and the other had a 2.0. They always chose the higher one. Also it’s very hard to get a job without prior work experience and people use gpa to get their first internship.

Ill say it depends on major, i got a pretty good job and they never check my gpa. Just did the interview process and accept me

in my major, GPA is pretty important, and all the places i have applied to have asked for it.

not true, depending on the major.

kayo102•

How will they know unless you tell them?

5
stoppetitioning:NewM:accounting/infosys•

this is a school of 40000 people... they are gonna know. the university will also probably put an indicator on the transcript or at the very least send an email about it/make a statement.

edit: also if multiple people apply they will find it highly suspicious that everyone is getting A's in one semester. it's not gonna be a secret.

SuperbInvestment5•

You do realize some employers don’t even request your transcript, and even if they did how would it be the student’s fault if the university implemented it for everyone. This statement is simply not true.

The only people who want AA grading are C students, change my mind

big facts^^ it's actually ridiculous

Or people being harshly affected by the pandemic right now. Some people can’t go home overseas, are losing family members —- family members who are dying alone in hospitals atm, have to go back to a dangerous environment at home, don’t have access to the same medications anymore or health services as a result, and so much more. I’m currently getting Straight A’s and still want the policy to help out everyone who cannot even complete their schoolwork.

4
Beta1548One of the wildly underpaid TA’s actually educating people •

Pass/fail already addresses all of that though. AA would just artificially inflate grades. And, frankly, if you can’t complete the course I’m not sure why one would get credit for it, let alone why they should get an A-

Again, not sure why you think someone should get an A- in a course if they don’t do the work required for the course.

2
Wirbelfeld•

So you want an A whether you learned the material or not? What’s going to happen when you go to the next class which has your current class as a prerequisite?

If you have issues in life that impact your ability to learn the material, you can request a withdrawal. It’s absolutely ridiculous to expect a university to hand out free As when you may or may not have actually learned the content in that class.

Luckylscx333:MTestudo:•

Also why was it double A not A/B? The whole thing seems like a copycat of P/F. Tbh the system rn makes everyone happy probably.

1
Algorob•

There is no way this is going to happen (nor should it, in my opinion). The opt-out P/F policy (with the lifting of the major requirements and gen. ed requirements) is the best of the multiple possible solutions — none of which were ideal.

Any chances that the university will accept this?

5
cureebi•

Highly unlikely, especially considering they have already announced the new policy in mass

SuperbInvestment5•

This means absolutely positively nothing.

So this basically reinforces everything I thought about SGA, that they only look out for themselves and never listen to the student body. It’s the biggest circle jerk and power trip on campus

2†
nbsoftwareOP•

The passing of the resolution in the SGA was strongly encouraged by many students. It was because of, not in spite of, student voices that this bill passed.

-1†
[deleted]•

You and I probably know different people then. It’s irrelevant as the university is not going to change anything.

6
nbsoftwareOP•

The discussion on this bill was extensive. If you’re interested, you can view the whole 11+ hours of it, including the (at least) 2 hours of student testimonials, on the SGA’s YouTube.

That’s great, so like a lot of people I don’t have 11 hours to watch the debate but I really don’t think it’s going to change my mind on it, but I will give some of it to watch later. The A/A- system seems pretty straightforward and the flaws with it seemed very very very apparent from the get go. I thought there was a general consensus, at least from students I talk to, that the cons greatly outweigh the pros. Granted, SGA of course has a greater scope into the student body but my worry is that it may be an echo chamber, that’s all.

Edit: also, it’s important to keep in mind the concept of a vocal minority versus a silent majority. Just saying
