Is Octopath Traveler worth $30?

Question

Octopath Traveler is currently 50% off on Steam.

I was interested in the game when it first came out, but it had a pretty mixed reception. It apparently had an okay and forgettable story. Most reviews stated that while the game had charm and nostalgic undertones, it wasn't worth the full price.

$30 dollars is still pretty hefty though. I'm sure if I wait a few more years I'll either forget about it or it'll be even cheaper. Now that time has passed, I wonder what ya'll think about the sale price tag of the game.

I waited and finally picked it up on the half price sale. Does it blow me away? Not really. Is it enjoyable to kick back and relax with? Absolutely. Your first comment is exactly why I waited for the sale.

It's one of my favorite JRPGs of all time. It's an absolute steal at half off.

It has one of the best turn-based battle systems ever created, a stunning visual style, a GOAT OST, charming and thematic short stories, fun characters, and mechanical interaction with NPCs that never gets old and adds such wonderful world-building.

A lot of people went in with misplaced expectations, thinking it was trying to be FFVI 2.0 because of a developer interview mistranslation, or that it would be structured like a standard JRPG with a focus on an overarching story and interactive ensemble cast. It's not those things -- it does its own thing, and well.

I can't put my finger on why I don't love this game. It's beautiful and unique visually, the music is great, the combat is engaging, and I even like the characters' personalities. But for whatever reason, it just doesn't draw me in as much as it should. Personally I would wait until it's $20 or less, if you get it at all.

I'm in the exact same boat. I loved so much about this game but got so disinterested after 10 hours or so.

Exactly the same with me. I was totally enamored by the demo and the early part of the game. But by the end of the chapter 1s I realized I didn’t give a single shit about any of the characters’ stories. And by that time all the novelty of the gameplay had worn off and it just felt bland and tedious.

Same here. I loved the music and the visuals but once that wears off you're left with a bland, repetitive game and little incentive to finish since the stories are so boring. I stopped during chapter 3 once I realized I had already seen all it had to offer. I loved the demo too and I was confident I would love the final game, but I ended up being very disappointed.

Going against the hate train but I fell in love with it and actually finished it. Can't say the same for most jrpgs these days that I never finish.

I bought it at full price, and I considered it worth every penny. The story is non-traditional. That doesn't mean it's necessarily weak. It's just different. Instead of one long story, you get eight shorter stories.

The battle system is a ton of fun and one of my favorite turn-based systems.

It looks beautiful, but I found the rest pretty underwhelming. A few hours past the honeymoon phase I quickly lost interest and had no desire to continue.

I just bought it because it looks beautiful. Would love to get lost in the vibe.

Yeah.

The Music is phenomenal, really. The Graphics looks gorgeous, especially if you dig the style. Also the combat system is really fun.

The Story is a mixed bag, personally i liked it. I had no problems that the stories were seperated. And yeah, the grind is real.

i got my switch february 1 and octopath was the first full price switch game i purchased. ive been obsessed with jrpgs since the early 90s -i wanted to be obsessed with this game- but the best decision i made recently was to put down this game 75% to completion and move on to another. it’s rather tedious and lacks the engagement other games with compelling narrative hook you with.

I paid full price and it gave me about 100 hours worth of entertainment. The story isn't super complex, but the game play was excellent. Also the music is better than most games. The boss themes are so fantastic. I really enjoyed it for what it's worth.

Bought it for 60 around launch.

Some of my favorite turn based rpgs to note: Dragon quest(basically all but favorites are11, 8,5,9), Paper Mario 1+2.

Bought it because I like job customization or some kind of customization besides just leveling and using spells/abilities.

Now is good? Worth $30?If you like turn based rpgs then yes. $60? Eh... I still have not finished it. I enjoy the music, the gameplay can get rather repetitive since its just break their defence and use your strongest moves. It also has random encounters which I can tolerate, but do not prefer though that's me.

The story just could not keep me interested and the characters do not really interact and you can go in any order. Hell, during cut scenes everyone else just dissapears. It feels like 8 separate stories and the idea is cool, but a large linear story would have been better imo.

Put about 40ish hours in for reference, so if I finished it, I'd get my money worth gameplay wise, but I don't think I want to.

Also in a month I put 100 hours into DQ11 and I have had Octopath for almost 2 years lol.

IMO it was worth $80 (welcome to Canada!) when I bought it. I thoroughly enjoyed playing it and didn't particularly mind the little episodic storylines, although I'll concede that they're definitely the weakest part of the game, alongside the lame dungeon design.

The combat is fun, the visuals and soundtrack are gorgeous, and customizing the different party members (woo job system) and taking advantage of all their path actions to explore towns (and steal everything that isn't bolted down) is always satisfying.

It's probably not gonna make any lists of the best JRPGs out there, but it's a good time as long as you're not the kind of player who needs a great/focused story to have fun with an RPG. And my bad opinion of the day is that I liked it more than the Bravely games.

It's well worth it, but only if you can go into the game accepting that it's a collection of short stories, not a novel. If you think you can buy into that, it'll be well worth your $30 because the gameplay, music, graphics and charm are fantastic.

I've really wanted to purchase a physical copy of Octopath Traveler for my Switch. I've owned the console since December of 2018 & only own Smash Ultimate. I plan on getting Mario Odyssey once I finish off a few other platformers I already own. Z: BotW is the only must have on the console I can think of but I already own & beat it on my Wii U so my Switch is pretty barren....

Yes I would say so.

I'd say it's absolutely worth it and I'm someone who gets a high out of paying as little as possible. I got it for $48 day 1 and it completely engrossed me for well over 60 hours (I've pushed it down on my profile so I can't see exact time right now but sorting my library still has it as my most played game). It's the only game I plugged the switch into the outlet for as opposed to playing for a while and having to dock it to charge.

There is no overarching storyline. It's just a bunch of single character quests and the extra characters on your team don't really interact outside of pressing + sometimes to initiate Tales-like scenarios between characters after story events. The gameplay is fun, the visuals are gorgeous, and the music is pleasant.

I started as the thief and picked just about every pocket in the game. Loved the character specials and how they let you interact with the world.

There is an overarching story connecting the others together with background lore in the final area with the superboss -- but yes, Octopath is fundamentally about eight separate personal stories.

Non-Existent story left me bored despite a stellar combat system, and obviously gorgeous art.
