Broken Guns Just Aren’t Fun

Discussion

I’d like to see the armament HP of almost every single gun in the game lifted. This is predominantly a game about shooty boats and when your boat can’t shoot anymore, that’s a really un-fun game mechanic.

It’s a viable tactic to use at times in a brawl, I get and do that myself. However they just break far too often. Some ships like Baltimore for instance, you absolutely cannot show broadside, so your front guns take a beating and often get knocked out. Then what?

Would love if WG could look at the frequency with which guns break in Legends and ask themselves if they think it makes for fun gameplay.

Laughs in my Boise, that lost two turrets on start of the game after one salvo

(all shells from Iowa hit two turrets and I received zero damage :D)

The Boise is such a great ship! Always ready to play a game with it. I don't lose turrets too often but usually only one. Losing two must be a real pain in the start tho lol

It helps keep ships balanced, but the Baltimore imo is a special case. A ship with no other main armament other than turrets, only gets 25mm bow plating, and its turrets are knocked out more frequently than I would like to have them to. However, they weren't the most armored turrets irl. Still, not fun though.

I agree they seem to have used it as a balancing method but I think they need to go back to the drawing board and find something else. It’s purely RNG and not something you can mitigate with skilled play. Which makes it a poor mechanic as far as I can tell.

It’s not RNG. Your turrets have a health pool, just like your ship. I think BBs are around 20k each. Skill is used to aim and knock them out and is very useful when fighting bow tankers like Jean Barts, Richelieus, Iowa’s, etc.

There are some Cruiser commander perks that increase this health pool and decreases the incapacitation rate. They can be used for both cruisers and battleships. I tried and it works well on each. So, while annoying, this mechanic is working as intended.

You’re right, it’s not all RNG but I’d say 95% of the time, people aren’t actually aiming for the turrets. RNG lands the shots there.

It’s working as intended but it’s not good and needs to be looked at. It just ain’t fun.

I think turrets being disabled should just be longer to repair by say 50-75% and make that action unable to be repaired via DC. You could then make the disable chance occur less often by around 15-20%.

I agree in a game it is very frustrating to just have your firepower cut in half or gone completely for the remainder of the match. Especially in certain cases when you have little to no control over it happening.

Its especially frustrating when 4 minutes in a Tirpitz takes out both turrets on a Richelieu in a single salvo

I love when the already broken secondaries get roasted because of continued HE spam and then you see no difference when a DD rushes you, because they can't hit for shit, but at least when they haven't exploded you can see them shoot the demons that haunt the ship, if the excuse is that secondaries have to be balanced at least make them mod unbreakable available in consoles so I can see the fireworks, it won't matter they can't be broken if they can't hit the fucking sun from a meter away

I agree that some boats should get more gun HP, but others like JB seem to be immortal to anything that isn't super heavy AP

It does seem like they went a little over board with it. In just under 1,100 games played, I've had the main turret on the Jean Bart destroyed more times than than all the other ship turrets combined (Seriously) and I don't play tier 7 that much.

I'm not a big Jean Bart player, but I know there's a lot of JB haters, so let's try to keep the discussion as impartial as we can.

losing two guns on the first salvo at the start of the match 60% of the time in my Bayern is great

The guns on a Richelieu and jean Bart are so vulnerable to being destroyed and it sucks when you have no guns half the game. The only option is to ram but by then your already dead

It is supposed to be that way. It is meant to be a weakness of the Jean Bart and other bow tankers. You can use a cruiser commander with the perk that improves turret health.

Nah, Battleships losing a gun. They are the most heavily armored parts if the ship. And you are going to tell me they can get knocked out as often and easy as they so? Bullshit.

In real life they got knocked out pretty easily and more often even. If not from actually destroying the turret(s), from killing the crew and silencing the gun(s) nonetheless.

2
SandPaperDild•

Maybe from blast killing the crew. But to the actual turret being broken? No. A barrel being broken? Yes.

For instance, the Montana class BBs were scheduled to have ~23 inches of armor. The main belt was only ~19 inches of armor.

Ya know, the stuff that protects all the internals.

Frontal turret armor does not protect crew members from shockwaves sending stuff flying through the turret or knocking crew members out, jamming the turrets traverse or the guns elevation mechanics, shells flying through the turrets roof or the individual gun ports.

In duells between BBs or BCs turrets frequently got jammed, disabled or destroyed by shell fire. What u/thebloodyhound90 says is true.

No where have I said a crew wouldn't be knocked out. Even then, not all of them would be knocked out. They would still operate the main battery, granted, would increase reload time or traverse time reaction. Which would be a more fitting implementation to the game. They already do this in WoT, they can do it here.

But the gun to be destroyed. Key word DESTROYED. That did not happen near as often as the game makes it.

Someone lacks the ability to comprehend what they read >.>

Yeah I hear that. It wasn’t uncommon in real life but this isn’t a sim and it’s meant to be fun. I’m ok for it to happen, just not as often as it does.

It feels far more common compared to the pc version. That’s anecdotal but I’d say they changed something to make it that way.

That’s... what I’m saying.

There is nothing more fucking frustrating then fighting two BBs in my Iowa and a gun being incapacitated.

I think it would be more realistic if each barrel could be damaged. I could stand losing a barrel but the whole turrent? Nah fam.
