Anyone here (or someone you know) thought they had aspergers but the diagnosis showed otherwise? Posted this before but deleted it by accident :-/

It’s not my case and I dunno anyone in this situation. I’m just curious about the experience and what alternative diagnosis they got.

I’ve read plenty of posts on this sub, over the years, of people who got diagnosed with other stuff, usually schizoid personality disorder, bipolar or other conditions, such as “social communication disorder”. I don’t know how many will still be on this sub though, since they’re not autistic.

yeah, BPD (is a common one for autistic women) and bipolar

Autistic women are commonly misdiagnosed as BPD?

yes, the symptoms overlap or can look similar enough:
- black and white thinking
- meltdowns
- "feelings of emptiness" (alexythimia)
- instability in interpersonal relationships
- impulsivity (can be a thing with any compulsive behaviour, eating disorders, any self-medicating due to depression or anxiety, or ADHD-related)

this is thought to all stem from fear of abandonment, and they tend to assume you have it even if you say that's not the case, by asking leading questions. Obviously, there might be some hangup about past relationships going wrong for obvious reasons.

Okay! Thanks for the detailed explanation!

A friend I've known since I was a teen was convinced she was like me after I got my diagnosis. She was in therapy for depression at the time and decided to try for one. She was told she just had low self esteem. I still think she's cool.

Was not diagnosed for anything? Was just low self-esteem?

This was a long time ago, but she said they told her she didn't have aspergers and that she just had low self esteem & introverted. If she was diagnosed with more than depression, she didn't share with me.

Hope she got some help anyway... :-(
