Well, to be fair, none of that stuff is extremely useful, unless you have a shortage of rags.

If it's scientist corpses then it could be pretty useful stuff.

You probably already know this, but just in case you don’t- cut up a single mattress and you will have enough rags to last you most of the game.
If you want to sleep in the house a single mattress tile will work fine. The rest are redundant, so there’s no reason to keep ’em around.

this seems like something that would happen in the world of cataclysm, corpses floating several meters in the air.

In my last playthough, a flying, flaming eye came out of an interdimensional portal, looked at me and infected me with a fungal disease. A floating corpse is one of the LEAST odd things I've seen in this crazy world.
