Investing in NZX

Hey all, I am looking for some advice on a good platform to buy individual shares on the NZX.

I'm tempted to give AirNZ a crack given how low the share price is now... Plus I'm investing for long-term.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

A low share price doesn't mean that the shares are a bargain.

Not financial advice: Do not buy shares until you have a grasp of what is going to come. As an example, study what is happening with Kathmandu these days.

Now have a good think about how long the loan will last AIR.NZ and what is likely to happen in the months ahead.

You could place share orders through NZX or ASB securities if you want to own the shares under your name.

For more diversified strategy, you could look at buying ETF on these too, or get investments in funds through invest now.

Any thoughts on why Kathmandu bounced so much?

The shares are going to be diluted 2:1, new shares sold at 50 cents for 1.2 shares.

This could be a good buy if you have confidence the 200 million they are getting funding for will be enough to get them through.

Some people may buy now thinking the price of each shares could go back to 3$. If you buy each for 1$ for example, thats an incredible 200% gain, but after the issue of new shares, the recovery price will actually be 1.5$ instead of 3. Is it really a good deal? Not so sure.

Buy something more solid, plenty of things are 50% down and are going to trend to these price.

Same thing could happen to Airnz. Shares could get diluted if they need more fundings. So tread with caution.

You think they did? They've only gone up 0.09 since the halt.

No, you're not. I'm slightly confused how that is a 0.28 increase though. When looking back on it for me on the 23rd it was 0.7 and on the 3rd of April it was 0.77 . Still an increase, just somehow there seems to be discrepancies between Google's data and the one I'm looking at.

Still waiting on the bounce. Hopefully it's after the entitlement offer.

Sharesies is cheapest for buying individual companies

ASB can be cheaper depending on the size and frequencies of trades

Nzx.com let’s you set up virtual share purchasing. Have a play with this for a few months and if you come out ahead commit some real money to the sharemarket. Just play money though. If you come out at a loss then you know you’re just like the majority who shouldn’t play the stock market

Learning this the hard way, but not selling up. Heavily invested in boeing and virgin, hopefully they're too big to fail

I think AirNZ is an ok option if you are looking WAY long term (3-4 years).

AirNZ is 51% owned by the government, so my view is that the NZ govt is never going to let them flop. It is likely however the Govt is going to bail them out in the coming month as AirNZ is looking at a severe reduction in their fleet/working value. This will likely lead to the Govt taking equity (51% shareholding to 60%-65% depending on the size of the bail out).

However personally i would hold of until we have a clear understanding when this lockdown is going to end- the shareprice is going no where but down for the time being.

GL tho man, I don't really know too much I just started investing about 2 months ago! Take my advice with a grain of salt ahaha

Note 3-4 years is not long term, and definitely not "WAY long term". The nz economy will take a while to recover from this, and you could see a period of low returns for a number of years, some companies may recover faster, some might go under. I would stay clear of air nz, they have a big challenge to overcome. There's plenty of other companies out there.

Ok. As i said im still just starting so for me 3-4 is very long term haha. Thanks for the reply though, appreciate the advice.

Air NZ are a huge gamble right now, and the best case scenario is that MAYBE you double/tripple your money. Maybe. They could do nothing for 3 years and underperform the rest of the market. I'd stick no a ETF unless you feel like gambling.

A good platform is ASB

alot of markets will rally when domestic lockdown is lifted. tourism and airlines will take longer

Bad unemployment stats mean that your consumer base will also have shrunk. If we get double digit unemployment, the vast majority of industries will take a knock.

In theory, this is already accounted for in the share value, by people who are better at predicting than you.

Air NZ won’t bounce back to the original price lmfao
