Asking for picture of social security card on rental application?

Advice

Is it normal for a rental application to ask for a picture of your social security card? That just seems like a lot of information considering I have not committed or been approved for the place yet. Also, I have not even seen the place. So, to give such sensitive information without any knowledge seems irresponsible, right? Or is this normal?

P.S. if it wasn’t obvious, this is my first time renting.

I mean, I gave my number during the application process for the credit and background check. I didn't have to provide the actual card at any time though.

It's weird. That said, there's nothing they can do with it.

Some of our apartments require the manager to make a copy of the DL and SS card when someone applies. If they don't have a SS card then their passport or ITIN. It's not uncommon.

Even those that don't we need the # when filling out the app and if we get back a SS mismatch or worse a stolen # we require the manager at that time to make a copy and re-run the background/credit check if indeed the # was entered incorrectly.

It's not often but we do get people using fake SS# when applying.

I made my social security card black and white using an app. Then, I sent it that way. They want the copy of it right? There is no need for them to have full color version.
