Dear user spamming the report button.

I see you, I hear you, i understand where you are coming from.

May I please suggest that rather than reporting every post that doesn’t fit your personal criteria of what does and doesn’t belong on this sub you use a similar and far more powerful button that requires even fewer steps and is guaranteed to, once and forever, remove the content from this sub that you do not like.

That button is the hide button. It’s incredibly powerful and it won’t disagree with you.

Once you hide content, it’s gone from your feed, you’ll never have to see it again.

Yes there are rumblings about posts here that could be posted on other subreddits, I understand.

AskPhotography was created to be an inclusive reddit where users decided what, and how, content gets posted.

It’s too late to rename this sub r/inclusivephotography but a name is just a name.

With that in mind, while posts are generating discussion and that discussion is generating content of benefit to users seeking to learn more about photography I’m not going to interfere.

Instead I implore you to use you voices, if you don’t like content downvote it, if you like it upvote it. Don’t like a post? don’t comment on it, hide it, move on.

Having a post removed is punishment, but it feels no where near as bad as having it just languish there ignored by the community.

And yes, I love that you also reported this post. A love letter far sweeter than just ignoring me.

Gotta be a troll, or someone who doesn’t understand how this works, or someone who has connected with you in another level.

I believe it’s someone trying to game the system.

While you as mods cannot see who reports something, admins can, and I believe you can report reports. If an admin thinks the report is a misuse of the reporting system, they can and do take action against users.

(I once got in trouble for reporting a Gallowboob post as spam on a sub he moderated. He reported the report. I regret nothing.)

I thought only posts asking for photo critique was off-limits? It's the only sort of post I see disappear.
In which case I hope this works the other way too, and people stop posting their pics.

Can you provide examples of what's being reported....for non-passive aggressive reasons of course....

Are you sure the someone who is angry over having their own posts/comments reported?

Without getting into the validity of this particular person's actions... There are people in this sub who treat the report button as a super downvote. The mods encourage that kind of behavior when they act on it.

I'm not particularly interested in users playing tag with the report button. Anyone thinks reporting another's post is an appropriate way of trying to get revenge is wrong.

Largely the only action mods take on responding to reports is:

  1. 80% removing actual spam
  2. 18% downvoting bad behaviour
  3. 1% asking you all to be civil
  4. 1% banning trolls

*all numbers completely made up

If it works, they aren't wrong.

I have an issue with a user who frequents this sub. He's known for citing his credentials and reporting people who point out his questionable reputation. I've never seen a mod ask for civility. But I've certainly seen bans.

If that's not your policy, you should look through my history and have a talk with the mod who took that action. There are people who will vouch for it being inappropriate.

Sounds like a control freak stuck in his house with nowhere to go.

We’re all in this together (but apart) he needs to take a deep breath and scroll on.

Some people are just too bitter. Maybe ask an admin to look into who is spam reporting?

Just ban them?

Not a mod, but I believe you can't see who reports posts.

LessRainOP•

Correct. Reports are anonymous.

You can use the new report abuse system to let the admins know about it, I’m assuming you have already but just in case you didn’t know.

I thought this post might suffice but given the ferocity of a few reports that have come in since this might be on the cards.

The beauty of the Hide button is lost on a few, some hella inconsiderate people out there...

2
jmp242•

I didn't even know there was a hide button. Does it just hide the post you click it on though? I imagine they would want something that hides categories of posts (not that people categorize nicely everywhere or even most places)...

RES filtering is amazing

LessRainOP•

I personally don’t understand the attitude in some people that the content posted on a subreddit needs to be filtered—by the moderation team—to suit their personal interpretations of what should and shouldn’t be posted.

There are a few users still upset that image posts have been allowed in this subreddit, for those that truely don’t like these posts I’d suggest filtering them out.

jmp242•

I'm not sure - how does one filter them out? Maybe this is just a lack of understanding reddit?

<i>I personally don’t understand the attitude in some people that the content posted on a subreddit needs to be filtered—by the moderation team—to suit their personal interpretations of what should and shouldn’t be posted.</i>

I suppose there has to be some filtering in a subreddit, or else you get usenet, i.e. all spam all the time, and there's no identity to any subreddit. I suppose there's some thought that the community of the subreddit could be part of what should be part of that subreddit. Isn't that the whole point of having a report function? To allow more than just the moderators to help filter? The alternatives (depending on if Reddit even allows this) would be all posts held till released by a moderator, or the afore mentioned free for all.

Anyway, I get that there are busybodies, and trolls, but I'm not sure that means that people shouldn't have some personal interpretation of what should be posted, and share that via the report button.

LessRainOP•

The report button is for spam and other content that breaks the rules of reddit as declared by reddit admin.

It’s not a tool you should use to try and influence the mod team.

If users were not misusing the report button for personal gain we would be able to set rules so that spam is quickly removed without the need for an individual to be constantly moderating every post. At the moment this has to be suspended as these people are being selfish and unfortunately there will be more spam making its way into the sub, not less.

Re filtering:

Many users make use of the res browser plugin to extend Reddit’s functionality to filter posts. You can do this by type (photo, text, link) or by keywords.

There are also some fairly comprehensively featured reddit clients available on the app stores for iOS / Android that provide similar functionality.
