As the title says, I enjoy the Kino series but we only ever got a single volume of the novels translated. You can find translations online for many of the books but I'd love it if it was picked up for translation and released physically.

Just a warning that Tokyopop’s translation for that volume is notoriously altered from what the author originally intended. If I were you I wouldn’t read that version.

Any idea what parts were off? Most of the stories in this volume were covered by the two anime adaptations and were mostly similar. It's possible both this translation and the adaptations got it wrong too or maybe there are some details I missed.

It's... the whole volume that was off, so to speak. It was heavily rewritten (even the translator complained about it at some point) and contains made-up passages and details that introduce inconsistencies, censored a particularly gory scene, changed how a couple of characters were presented, and also rearranged the chapters so that the protagonist's origin comes first (whereas it was supposed to be revealed later).

Here are two short comparisons (with a fixed fan translation that came way later down the line) I posted a while ago:
Prologue Excerpt
Chapter 6 Ending Excerpt

(Also worth noting that the 2003 anime did change or condense certain aspects of this volume, most notably the Colosseum story which was more than half anime-original.)

There's translations up here and there for quite a bit of it, including some re-translations that make tracking the whole thing a bit confusing.

I should honestly give them a read sometime.

I'll just post what's out there here for your convenience:

The Baka-Tsuki project page has the first 17 volumes minus 12. A fixed translation of volume 1 (Tokyopop release was censored in certain parts and heavily rewritten throughout) and a couple of special tie-in stories are also posted here as external links.

Untuned Strings has another set of translations for volumes 2-11 and is still ongoing. They're generally doing their own thing, and translates from the Korean release, as far as I know.
They also used to have volume 12 but are now redoing it. Maybe there's a pdf/epub of it still floating around somewhere, but the original posts seem to have been taken down for the time being.

Lastly, the ongoing manga adaptation series, which is licensed by Vertical, has one tie-in short novel chapter each volume.

Heh, I've had all 17 volumes sitting in my library forever, I just haven't gotten around to it. Good info for those who don't have it, though!

Whoa, I looked it up and on Amazon it's $45. Is there a reason it's so expensive? I'm under the assumption that it's just like any other manga volume that would usually cost $10 but maybe my assumption is wrong.

Is there a reason it's so expensive?

Out of print - the publisher (Tokyopop) went bankrupt around ten years ago. Resellers on amazon tend to overprice rare books.

Ahhh, that makes a lot of sense. That's really sad to hear

Don't be. Even its translator doesn't recommend it.

Hmmm, this is very disappointing

Usually, for the more good deal sites you can find it for $20, the cheapest I've seen was $16 but at that point I didn't bother with wanting to buy this version.

I'll keep a look out, thanks for that information
