I’m an emergency medicine resident doctor, and we wear masks all day every day currently. I have a box of big buttons lying around and a few days off so figured I’d get something done! Machine washable and easy to make. I did chain 25, two rows of hdc, leaving long tails on either end to sew on the buttons.

Do you know if these would be acceptable to donate to a hospital? I’ve heard a lot recently about how much the masks can hurt when you’re wearing them super frequently. I’d love to help somehow!

I think they would be appreciated! If they’re washable yarn it should be fine. I’m using a washable acrylic. They can make doffing the PPE a little more difficult but I’m making a bunch for co-residents. The backs of our ears get raw after wearing a mask for 10+ hours everyday

Bless you. Thank you for being our front line. You have got to have a heart as big as the sky. After working your long hours, you 1) think of something to help yourself, 2) design and make it, and then 3) make more for others who are putting in the same kind of hours.

It's been suggested to me (by someone who works in a major hospital) that local care homes may find these very useful

I’ve seen 3/4” - 1” recommended. But the buttons in the picture look a lot bigger. Are they still comfortable/functional with bigger buttons? Do you think small buttons would work too? I’ve got a LOT of little buttons but am considering buying one of the variety packs at Walmart just to get enough big buttons for a decent price.

I think any buttons would work. I just had these big ones hanging around. They’re big enough that the yarn fits through the holes

Do you think your mask straps would slip off of a smaller button? Like a dress shirt sized button?

1
coffeecatsyarnOP•

That might be too small because I think the ear strap is about as thick as one of those.

I'm donating 100 of these between 2 hospitals that my friends work at on monday.I hope it helps a little..you're a hero and thank you for your work!

You’re a star! I’m waiting on feedback from a nurse on a couple I made and then I am going to aim for 50. Maybe I’ll hit 100 if they work up fast enough.

I’ve also seen a headband with buttons. I wonder if you could crochet a headband and add buttons. Might be less fiddly to put on than a back strap.

Yeah I’ve seen that. I get a headache with headbands so that’s why I didn’t go that route but I’ve seen lots of coworkers doing that

So glad you found something that works for you! I’m not a hcp, but just wearing a mask for a bit to the grocery store once a week hurts my ears. Headbands usually slip off my head, so they probably wouldn’t work for me either.

What a smart idea! I need to make myself one of those.

Oh I get it now! A friend shared something like this on Facebook but it didn't include a photo of the crocheted contraption in use

I made a pair of these last night, except the buttons are smaller and the strap a little wider. My mom and gramma are both super high risk so they wear their masks every time they go anywhere outside, they really like these.

I'm in the process of making a bunch of these, does the button transfer pressure points to the tops and bottoms of ears? If it does, I want to make them a little wider.

I've been making these too. Lots of medical and Frontline people can use them. I've been using we cotton for mine
