I'm planning on purchasing reaper this week...

And I have a question. I'm on a previous version 5 build and I don't really want to update to reaper 6 yet. I don't like reinstalling if things are working, only when they aren't.

With that said, if I purchase a license from the website, will it work for my current version of reaper? Thanks!

The beauty about Reaper is that each update is downloaded and installed on top of the last without the need to get involved with the process beyond agreeing the actions. My experience since buying it six months ago has been that the updates have been fairly seamless. Hope this helps.

I would say it does, but I would double check the website FAQs and such to make sure.

I would be very surprised if a reaper license bought now didn't cover you for version 5.

I am incredibly picky and discerning over my work-related applications, but so far I am only seeing benefits in shifting to 6.

The transition from 5 to 6 occurred almost automatically. Started a project in V5, finished it in V6. Didn't lose any modifications, packages, custom actions etc.

Do you due diligence - always. But you can probably be confident with this particular issue.

Just so you know, updating Reaper isn't like some apps. You just install right over top and you're good. It doesn't rewrite your settings or templates, etc. I've been doing that for years. Glad to see your enjoying it, best wishes

The license explicitly covers the current version onward, but maybe it's implied that older versions are included because they're outdated and are of no use (at least in theory). Contact Cockos to double check.

[Edited for correct license information]

The 60€ license covers you for TWO major versions. So if you buy a license now it will be valid for any version 6 and 7. You'll need to buy a new license if you want v8. Typically a new major version is only released every two to four years, so considering the license is only 60€ and the time scale for new releases, it isn't that big of a deal.

The license key is just a text file. You can use it on any amount of computers you want.

The upgrade is back compatible and seamless. You can easily roll your theme back to the v5 Default, or whatever theme you're currently using, as soon as you install it, if you don't like the v6 theme. Under normal circumstances none of your settings or modifications should be lost. There might be a change or two to existing features that causes you to modify your workflow a little (hopefully for the better/faster, but not always).

Going to v6 is no different from v5 updates. It's just a bigger list of fixes and additions in one package, and occurs when enough time has gone by that the Devs feel it is time for another major version, which helps them generate a bit of extra income every handful of years, as it expires older licenses. If you're concerned about particular features, the changelog is detailed, and they release videos outlining the big changes.

BTW, if you want a temporary license until July...

I'm pretty sure that if you buy a license now (where the currently released version is 6.X), you will have a license that works until 7.99 regardless of which version you have installed.

Yeah, you're right... license bought since v6 was released covers 6/7 regardless of your current installation.

I assumed the license key would be tied to each major release, like most other software with a similar key. But it looks as though the key will unlock any older version.

Edited my post to reflect that.

Reaper 6 has a ton of new nice features and it should seamlessly install on top of your old version with full backwards compatibility.

You can always do a portable install of Reaper -- which will be totally separate from your v5 install and not affect it -- and evaluate if you want to upgrade. You might want to switch to the v5 theme.
