Gun Search Engine

Does anyone know of a decent gun search engine where I can put in actual gun features and find various models that meet my wants?

Most of the online shopping places only offer a search like, "Manufacturer" "Caliber". I want to search terms like DAO, types of safeties, capacity, possibly weight/dimensions, etc.

I seem to recall someone on here a few weeks ago advertising a wiki they were building, but I can't find it to see if it has been upgraded to functional yet.

If you want to partner with me, I can code something like this and we can get it up and running.

If we got a few people together this wouldn't be that hard to create. If you made a GUI with the different fields and drop down tabs for anything that's not a numeric value for imputing data then adding firearms wouldn't take long and it would make the search parameters correlate well with the data base. It would get tedious when we got to minor variations like finishes and sight but that could be worked around by having something like an options field.

I hope all of that makes sense.

Oh and I would be interested in helping with this.

I coded something similar, a system using PHP to hold people's hands as they chose parts for a custom computer. Kept track of all the fiddly bits (right socket type, right ram speed, etc) and only showed applicable parts, rank ordered by price and reviews.

Gimme a shout, I'd be interested in helping.

I have neither the time nor the ability, but I would encourage you to talk to the other replies here from people that do.

I would even Paypal $50 over once its done.

I would be interested in helping to build/maintain something like this. I'm knowledgeable with CSS and a little data management with PHP but I'm good with graphics and interface design.

If you build it, they will come....

I suspect that something like this would take a crapload of time to keep updated...

It's ok, but still really only offers the ability to search by Manufacturer and Caliber. I guess they throw in a size option, too.

But I want to also, for example, eliminate polymer framed guns from my search. Or specify milled slide vs. stamped, Striker fired vs otherwise, and any of the other multitude of specificities that make a gun "my gun".

Yea that would be really cool to have a database that does all that

Do you want a self-enclosed data system that just has an internal listing of thousands of firearms sorted by certain criteria or do you want this engine to pull results for gunbroker, google, armslist, etc?

The former.

I was wishing for the same thing.

I've been mulling over the coding and how I'd attack the problem. But, I've been busy with house/home moving this past month.

I have been thinking to pull in data from auctionarms, gunbroker, etc ... so that there was a DECENT search interface.

I have hosting on webfaction, and was planning to mock something up.

A decent mobile interface would be useful, but not critical. (I am behind the USAF firewall during work days, so can't see many such sites until I'm home)

There IS a gun finder for guns in the movies - http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Main_Page - sometimes that helps
