I saw that post, too. I don't see why people can't just skim over posts they find irrelevant to them.

Using the report functionality to communicate to the mod team is pointless.

We have no way to respond to you.

If you wish to communicate with the mod team either use Mod Mail or create a post.

This is also a violation of the subreddit rules 3 & 4. If you don’t wish to abide by the rules of this subreddit please contribute elsewhere.

rules 3 & 4

Could you add the rules to old.reddit.com/r/AskPhotography as well? The only way I was able access them was via the new reddit design.

I find these two rules questionable to be honest.
If I read them correctly, they basically allow all content on r/AskPhotography regardless of it being a question related to photography or not and submissions will not be removed as long as they produce community engagement.

Extreme example: Would be OK for someone to sell his Magic cards as long as someone who is interested stumbles upon the post and starts negotiating about prices (therefore crating community engagement)?

[The report functionality is] not a tool you should use to try and influence the mod team.

Isn't that the sole purpose of the report button?
Obviously the mods cannot always check everything so rule breaking submissions / comments are reported to alert the mods.

I agree that it shouldn't be used to to report valid posts or as a communication channel though.

Edit: typo

In this sub in particular I’d like the report button to be used to alert the mod team to serious breaches of Reddit Code of conduct rules.

If the post is relating to illegal conduct or is the kind of post that would upset Admin then yes please report it - we’d like to remove it immediately.

If a post is blatant spam (as in a post selling Magic cards) please report it, we’d like to remove it immediately.

If you feel that a post doesn’t belong here then express your option by downvoting it, hiding it and ignoring it.

All rules are questionable. I’m not going to write a 70 page outline dictating the nuances of where lines fall. I’ll use my common sense and I trust users to do the same.

The new rules are pinned to the top of this reddit. Is that visible on old.reddit?

Isn't that the sole purpose of the report button?Obviously the mods cannot always check everything so rule breaking submissions / comments are reported to alert the mods.

The vast majority of problematic reports submitted in this sub are users trying to involved mods in their disputes with other users. Personally I do not care to get involved in these disputes.

The next most common report is users complaining about the type of posts made in this subreddit. Personally I don’t understand these complaints. This sub in particular is not a mod curated list of questions we feel might interest you, it’s up to the sub to upvote / downvote content as they see fit.

I've only used report button for the self-promotional stuff and spam, I think. How do you rate this phone pic of my cat? How is my boudoir photography coming along? Check my pick from the back garden, someone asking how to improve their portfolio, random videos from their new 'tube channel with no context (often added to 40 other subs). Oh, and "edit this pic for me".
r/pics, please use it, do some creative writing title "my ww1 and 2 war veteran grandfather's dog last year just before it had to have its snout amputated but now he's fine and so is the dog RIP" and rake it in. I would not dream of giving photo critique so I'm not subbed to r/photocritique

More relevant but borderline: how can I make this pic just like this photog
does. I personally enjoy those posts but feels dodgy here. "How does NN achieve this type of yellow" is cool and relevant I guess, even if it's often linked low-effort to someone's IG and not to the relevant pic...

I think the post that sparked this report is a perfect example of why I'd like to let these things be fleshed out by the community. At first it absolutely looks like the post might not really fit here, but then after being given further opportunity to explain themselves it turns out OP has a very valid question resulted in decent discussion.

I personally enjoy these posts but it feels dodgy here.

This pretty much sums up why I’m happy to allow posts to be voted on by the community rather than removed by the actions of a few.

I’m not trying to remove the user group’s ability to control what content appears on this sub, I just want it to be one person one vote.

I’m personally not into photo critique either —I’d be way, way too harsh— but the community has been engaging with those posts here and they’ve generated some interesting content. Whenever I see these posts I generally immediately hide them.

First of all, thanks for the reply and the explanation regarding the interpretation of the rules.

The new rules are pinned to the top of this reddit. Is that visible on old.reddit?

Yes, that post is visible if you sort by "hot" (which is the default if you simply go to r/AskPhotography). I meant that the sidebar seems to offer no way to get to the rules on old reddit.

Added, thanks.
