New Start Chatting Feature
Howdy folks, wasn't what I though the first announcement post I'd be making around here would be about. But sometimes big world events get in the way of plans. Big world events like reddit releasing a questionable new feature with no warning and some questionable thought process backing it.
So here are some things you need to know about this feature that are not immediately obvious:
- It is not officially sanctioned by the subreddit it appears to be originating from. The chat rooms accessed by these buttons that say they are part of r/datahoarder and moderated and controller directly by reddit
- The chats consist of up to 8 random users who expressed interest in talking to people in this sub.
- No there is no validation on that last statement, literally anyone grazing by the sub can hop into a chat
- Yes there is already widespread occurrences of exactly what you'd expect there to be occurrences of in such a situation
- The chat functions don't work particularly smoothly. Some users have reported being unable to join or leave a channel
- The notification feature is more a thought than a feature. You may experience difficulty shutting it off.
- Bonus points: sometimes you just randomly end up in a group completely unrelated to the one you assumed you'd end up in.
- Option is only visible on the redesign site.
Anyways just is just a public service announcement letting you all know to BE CAUTIOUS. It's 2am here and I just learned about this feature being added about 10 minutes after it went live.
And for anyone wondering why we don't just opt out of this feature: Reddit's Official Response on Lack of Opt Out
Apologies for any typos, it is late.
