SpitFireAudio... OMG

So i think someone the other day said that spitfire has a dope strings pack... well it does! It also has a ton of other free sounds that I'm absolutely blown away by.

https://www.spitfireaudio.com/labs

Highly suggest anyone who wants to play around with a free synth to download the free packs and play around. I'm seriously blown away.

Christian Henson is absolutely amazing. Spitfire records live professional musicians including BBC orchestra string players in high quality settings, so it’s really generous that they’re all free. They also have a “composer magazine” where they interview artists as they explain production and take you through the process in video - definitely worth checking out.

All free? When I visit the page with the BBC orchestra it tells me to pay almost 1000 €, am I missing sth or understood sth wrong?

Or did you mean, they record the BBC orchestra strings AND release other stuff for free?

3

Search spitfire labs. I think all of their stuff on that page is free.

RichardSolomonnn•

Labs are always free. They're like lite versions of their full sample libraries.

8

Most, if not all, of the labs series are individual libraries of their own, not lite versions of full products. They are smaller than most of their paid libraries yes, but not derived from bigger libraries, maybe with the exception of soft piano (and i am not even sure about that).

MattGriggs152•

If anything, I’d say their string packs are the weakest ones of their whole free catalogue (their paid string packs are INCREDIBLE though), which is really a testament to the quality they’re pumping out, cause the strings are still pretty good

GarlicBreadLasagne•

As someone with a limited budget the strings are far better than all other free packs/synths I've found and all of the cheap ones I've tried too. The Soft Piano and Wurli synths are great too.

Fuck and their drum kit is a great starting point for most of my percussion now - tend to change it out piece by piece but for most drums it "does the job" of setting the groundwork to go under a chord prog or melody I've found

17
MattGriggs152•

Yeah, their strings are some of the best free ones out there, but compared to the rest of their free catalog, they’re a bit weaker than the Wurli and Soft Piano etc

4

You might wanna check out SCC Expressive Strings too. They are more flexible as far as i remember, and sounds great for a freebie. But yeah, the LABS strings are a generous freebie http://www.schristiancollins.com/vi-orchestra.php

Spitfire Audio is definitely one of my favourite companies. Waiting for the day I can buy their Everything bundle.

15k, holy crap.

9
Intrepolicious•

Yeah and that's the "sale" price. Normally over 22 grand!

4
AnotherEnigmaMusic•

Yep, it's a lot! Arguably worth it for the quality and sheer amount of stuff you get, and can usually get a decent discount around Black Friday.

I do love labs, apart from the two sliders I wish they were labelled so it’s clear what they do, I know it’s explained what they do on the website but it would be nice to have it in the interface

It's their Originals range I love. Amazing value at £29 $29 €29, even though in the UK we're probably losing out (slightly) in the exchange rate there, but not by much.

Lympwing2•

Just bought the Cinematic Percs. The Originals are repackaged and condensed sounds from Albion One which was an amazing sound library

5
purple-lambo-genie•

Yeah Labs is the best free set of instruments that I have ever heard

Spitfire's libraries are the fucking best.

No. You’re the best

Coming from you... :)

I love LABS. I’m a hobbyist and I use mostly free stuff and they are amazing sounding. Nobody has mentioned how dope the trumpet sounds are yet.

dipro808•

do anyone know the price of their vst "Hans Zimmer String" or something like that?

4
RicoandMiella•

You beat me to it. I downloaded the whole thing yesterday and was going to post about it here today.

AvtrMrkt•

LABS is straight fire. The strings 2 with the pizzicato strings are some of my favorite.

the VST is amazing but their customer care is absolute garbage. I had to update my Labs in order to use the sounds I got but there all I got was error messages and I can’t even find the update button. I even tried reinstalling the whole software and it stuck on the old version.

All I want from them is to make it easier to update their products.

I picked up Alternative Solo Strings by Spitfire and it is god-tier. I have their LCO library as well and there are some crazy cool textures in that.

2

OP... thank you for sharing this for us plebs

2
cole-one•

In my opinion, paid or free, Spitfire produces some of the highest quality instruments I've ever used, and the fact that they dont eat up too much CPU makes me puke rainbows. Love spitfire.

2
Zilreth•

They do sound nice but honestly anyone with FL Studio should check out flex and look in their strings presets pack, it's pretty nice and simple and more clearly differentiates playstyles

1
dberchtOP•

All the other packs though.

Go to https://www.pianobook.co.uk/
and if you have Kontakt, download these ones (some of my favorites):
https://www.pianobook.co.uk/library/soft-string-spurs/
https://www.pianobook.co.uk/library/fluteviolin/
https://www.pianobook.co.uk/library/soft-string-spurs-extras/
https://www.pianobook.co.uk/library/mandolin-guitarophone-marxophone/
(note, all samples are in .wav format so you can rebuild instruments in a sampler of your choice and some are already made for Sforzando, for example)
Pianobook is a project by Christian Henson from Spitfire Audio and community is sampling instruments and giving them for free.

13
Edheldui•

do these work with the free Kontakt Player?

2
Glagoliath•

They don't, you need a full version of Kontakt because it's just how Native-Instruments are doing business, blame them, not developers.
In order for freebies to work in Kontakt Player developers need to buy licences from Native-Instruments, basically you are buying packs of serial numbers. Then those serial numbers are used for products to be registered in Native Access.
The whole thing kills the entire point of a freebie because then a developer needs to invest money in order for people to have freebies that work in Kontakt Player, but then Native-Instruments say:"Buy Kontakt full version for $400 and enjoy all freebies out there".
But, like I said, all samples are in .wav format at Pianobook and you can rebuild everything in any sampler you have.

Daiwonhttps://soundcloud.com/no-owls•

I can't seem to get them to work, unless I'm missing something.

1
rishidasofficial•

It works with free kontakt player. Some might not work as they are made by individuals and not professionals

0
Andrew_Culture•

The labs packs I’ve downloaded work in their own shell like a vst. I don’t think they need kontakt at all.

How does it compare to Native instruments strings?

Is it worth having both? I recently bought Komplete, but then discovered Spitfire a few weeks ago.

1
jmflinuxtx•

Depends on what you are trying to do. The labs strings have a great sound, but it doesn't have the layers/mic options/etc. I would say it is worth having both given the price of labs. All of the spitfire stuff is really good though, I have several libraries from them including Albion One, BBC Orchestra, and a few others. The strings that come with Komplete ultimate just don't compare.

3
ccattbbugg•

Yup, friend of mine just showed me this just last week. Lots of good stuff once you have it all said and done loaded into the VST. Dont miss Opia, it's got a wide variety including a very nice aux percussion pack.
