If the show had been canceled...
Currently on a rewatch of the 2007 tv show 'moonlight', with Alex O'Loughlin and Sophia Myles. That show, sadly, only had one season. But we still got an amazing send off, as the two main characters, Mick and Beth, (!spoilers!) got their shit together, admitted that they loved each other, and kissed. There were plotpoints unresolved, of course, but the main focus got resolved, the romance.
I was thinking about what season had the best cut off point, in terms of a sudden cancelation for criminal mknds, in your opknion. The final double epiosde, devided between two seasons, would in that case both be in he cancelation season, as they filmed them as one.
Personally, season 5 had the best cut off. They had the reaper arc finished and 'the prince of darknes' was an amazing send off. Plus, the show was at it's best here, in my opinion, so they would've left on a high note.

I always thought season 9 would have been a good time to end the show. The season finale itself was one of the best that the show's ever had not just because of the fast-paced action but because of the way it drew the BAU into small-town politics where they were out of their element. Also by that point in the series, the show has already explored every character's backstory in a way that didn't wouldn't have left any loose ends. Prentiss was already settled in her life in London, Hotch had found some sort of closure with his encounter with Hailey and Foyet, Spencer had begun to move on from Maeve's death, JJ's whereabouts in season 6 were explained, Garcia came to terms with her underground hacker past, Morgan was finally ready to settle down, Blake managed to make amends with Strauss, Rossi was still Rossi but they didn't really have anywhere for him to go except retirement.
