Mimecast vs ProofPoint
We're looking at ProofPoint and Mimecast internally and possibly to add externally.
What are the pros and cons outside of price difference of these two that you've experienced?
Thanks!

get the one that can protect internal user communication
One is the market leader and more affordable than the other. Also, the same one was the Gartner leader for many years in email gateway security - Clue, only one has an MSP multi-tenant platform.
Minecast now has an MSP platform. Only issue is you have to start office with 2,500 seats.
Ah got me there :) I didn't know. Worth a look? (minimums aside)
I'm with proofpoint and didn't meet the 2,500 seat minimum. Price wise Minecast was more expensive.
Now are you talking proofpoint essentials, or the real proofpoint enterprise version?
Proofpoint Essentials - Professional
Okay here is my 2 cents on it because we use it. It has a very good effective rate, however knobs and controls are almost non existent. When they say its dumbed down, it's way down.
In the long run I'm not sure I can live with it, for a client of 10 it's okay, for 100 there are just to many times I need more info or control.
Just out of interest - what additional knobs and controls would you need?
I find the logging severely lacking when I need to troubleshoot something. If an email was blocked early on in the process I would never see it in the log (I get it being saas causes some of this). All I get though is a spam confidence high, but nothing I can dig deeper into.
Also with the custom filters I can only allow, I cannot skip some checks. For example just skip an rbl check with mail from a certain domain, i can only say allow which basically skips everything.
Gotcha... I think we're going to roll with it for now. But I'll keep that in mind. Maybe down the road we'll end up looking at something else potentially.
Thanks for the input!
we are doing POC's right now with both.
So far, Proofpoints dashboard is much better, but I like Mimecast's support and implementation guys so far. Also I like the Segasec product from Mimecast.
Other than that, the price is DRASTIC. Proofpoint wants >$250k. Mimecast is a quarter of that.
What is Proofpoint Essentials? we are POCing P1 licensing
Interesting how many endusers are you looking at? I'm also looking at Avanan
2500+

what version? im not talking about essentials.
How many seats have you got man!!! 250k!!
2500+
Wow FYI you’d be looking at less than 2k a month with SpamTitan. Drop me a line if you want to have a look
We use Proofpoint essentials internally and with customers, via PAX8, and is great.
Years ago we moved from MXLogix/McAfee, over to Proofpoint, and had so many issues we tried Mimecast. Uts a really nice service as well, but a real pain in the butt to setup, and at the time it wasn't really MSP friendly. I'm sure its changed some, and I'm talking 4 or 5 years ago.
But we moved back to Proofpoint after they fixes their growing pains, and its been rock solid since then.
Interesting thanks for the input. Have you looked at Avanan at all? Were going to be setting up ProofPoint likely through Pax8 and their NFRs but Avanan wants to do a demo with us and what he's described of their service makes tons of sense. As well as getting a good rating from Gartner. But only found a few reviews on them.
No, I've never heard of Avanan. Are they pretty new? I haven't looked at spam services in a while. Almost every customer we have uses Proofpoint, so it would be a pain to move. 😆
Yeah they work similar to iron Scales I guess? They sit in the mail flow with an API so nothing that gets flagged ever hits the mailbox, whereas ironscales it can be in the mailbox for up to 90 seconds.
They claim and a few reviews claim that they catch a bit more than proofpoint with less false positives.
I'll wait to demo it to find that out though
Yeah I'll have to look into it as well. I looked at IronScale with our PAX8 rep and it looks awesome.
You should have free NFR licenses for I believe 5 boxes with it through Pax8 to try 🙂
If your customers are smes you should consider SpamTitan as well. I have top end - mostly legal- customers on mimecast and all my Smes on SpamTitan. Pricing is fantastic
Right now we're wanting something for our own team internally primarily.
