Experienced riders who’ve never broken a bone?

Text

I’m just learning to ride my Pint now and I am a little freaked out about injuring myself (I know, very unique). I’ll start by saying I’ve soaked up as much online information and safety tips as I feel I can from both videos and posts around the internet.

From everything I read including this subreddit, you’d get the idea almost everyone has broken a bone at some point riding their Onewheel. I am wondering how much of that perception is true though.

So if you’ve never broken a bone riding your Onewheel, let me know and also say how many miles you’ve got if possible!

EDIT: Thanks for the replies everyone! I totally agree with all the comments regarding gear. I have a helmet, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads all of which I wear. I was actually looking to see if there are any other pieces of gear that might be a good idea.

I threw this thread up and then went for my first proper float on the local pathways, about a 5km ride. It went really well and I got the ‘hang of it’ pretty quick. I could really tell what I need to work on, and what my limits were.

As an unfortunate twist, when I got back I checked my email and my co-worker who introduced me to OneWheel nosedived off his XR today: broken thumb, separated shoulder and road rash. He said it was his fault though as he pushed the speed of the board and nose-dived.

I definitely intend to use it to cruise and not as a speed machine.

5400 miles and no broken bones. 1 nosedive accelerating too fast on an incline and a couple falls from obstacles (rut on a trail and a below-grade water cap)

700miles with no broken bones. I had one nose dive and I’ve taken a few spills trying to push my limits. 2 pieces of advice: 1)Echoing everyone else: get the safety gear 2)Learn how to fall. I’ve taken years of martial arts training which has helped. Take some time to learn how to tuck and roll. You might even look cool doing it 🙂

Agreed

I've been doing judo and brazilian juijitsu, learning how to break fall has saved me a few times.

There are two types of OneWheelers...Those who have fallen and those who just haven’t fallen yet. It’s up to you to give yourself as much protection as you see fit when that time comes!

I think, for the OW, it should go more like: There are two types of OneWheelers, those who are going to fall, and those who are selling their boards.

Get some protective gear. Always wear a helmet and some sort of wrist protection. I got a mt bike chest protector as well. The older I get the longer it takes for bruises and general discomfort to heal and go away. Which also means days off your board. Ride predictably and pay attention. Don't be like all these Jack asses... I cracked my head because I forgot my helmet etc etc.

I see all these YouTubers on their phone controlling a drone and filming while on their onewheel ... No shit you fell because you were way to distracted ...

4000+ km never broken anything. Worse was some mild road rash once in my first 100km.

I said this in a post earlier today but here goes: I nosedived the second day I had my onewheel and got away with some bruises and a small road rash. Now 3 years and 2500 km later I'm still nosedive free!

7 months since I started floating with my pint and haven't broken a bone. My board is pretty scratched up from tumbles but I have never fallen off in a way that I couldn't run out. Only nose dived once so far and I managed to bring the board back up and keep riding. I think my background in board sports such as longboarding and snowboarding have helped but I also practice slowly on different terrain often.

New owner here. I bought a shitload of safety gear because I just want to shred and not worry about falling.

I also put my gear on and practice falling on my basement cement floor.

Helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads (triple 8 set of all three was like $30-40), hip/butt pads. And then I wear my clear biking safety glasses— feels like snow goggles heheh.

I shred fearlessly.

Over 1k miles. A couple of nosedives I rolled out. Plenty of bails on trails. Worst injury so far is a bruised calf.

I'm not doing big bonks or cool skate tricks, but I wouldn't say I take it particularly easy either.

Get safety gear and learn how to fall. Learn to feel what the board is doing, learn its limits, and learn your own limits. Don't start to push until you're very comfortable with all of the above.

got about 1k miles between my pint/XR. no nosedives yet *knock on wood*. Always ride at a comfortable speed (13-15 mph) and stay alert for irregularities on the road. Also dress for the fall, not the ride.

Probably one of the best pieces of advice.

800 miles no broken anything some minor bruises many nosedives and wipeouts all of which I was basically asking for by riding on the limits, if your worried use protection lol

1,300+ miles without injury. Never worn any protective equipment. (not proud, just being honest)

2k miles, a few nose dives but no broken bones. Worst injury was 0mph practicing 180s haha

I’m not going to be the first to say this, but always wear a helmet! I’ve definitely had a fall where it came in handy, and I’ve got a buddy who probably would not be here if he weren’t wearing his when he got in an accident breaking his wrist.

3000 in by next week. Several falls during trial and error, one as high as 23mph. Learning how to fall is critical. Taking time to understand the board is paramount. End of the day, it’s a board sport. Things can be done safely, but it’s unrealistic to to rule out avoiding injury.

I had about 350 miles on my pint, I did have one nasty fall resulting in me hitting the ground hard with my shoulder surprisingly I didn't break anything or dislocated it. It was just really sore.

humphree•

350 miles so far on a pint. My first week riding back in January I took a pretty nasty fall being a stupid idiot seeing how far the board would go after dying and that resulted in a swollen arm/wrist(found out the board just shuts off completely, lesson learned). Definitely good advice to take it slow at first despite how bad the urge to push the limits are. I've since learned to fully respect and listen to the board. It's crucial to build the muscles in your legs, you'll feel much more confident when your stance is nice and sturdy. I ride with a partial crouch 90% of the time which basically feels like holding a squat for 30+ minutes. I just realized recently how crazy big my calves have gotten haha but through practice I've been able to tackle some pretty gnarly terrains and have a ton of fun.

350 miles is 563.27 km

2500 miles. No broken bones. 4 riders in my house, no broken bones.

1000 miles (in San Francisco) no broken bones. U have to know how to fall

760 with no broken bones and a few falls. I’ve been able to run out every nose dive I’ve had with most of my falls being from the beginning of my onewheel journey.
