Made up husband who is stupid

Hits all the buttons, fat smoking husband who is controlling and stupid. And OP of post, these illnesses would not put him in the shielding category.

"He is 50, v overweight, BAME and smokes 20 a day. His parents passed away years ago, his dad at 46 from heart failure. He has (controlled) hypertension, pre-diabetes which he takes met for in for, and he also buys ventolin on the internet, presumably because he doesn’t want to discuss his respiratory problems with the doctor. He does no exercise. None.

Unbeknownst to me he is in the “shielding” category. He works from home mostly anyway, but he didn’t tell me about the shielding thing. The GP surgery has been chasing him since at least February for bloods which I think relate to high cholesterol and diabetes. He won’t go because he says that the blood clinic will be too much of an infection risk.

And here’s the thing: he goes out each and every day, without fail, usually to the supermarket, or the garage for fags. Today he is going to the tip. He washes his hands when he comes back but doesn’t wear a mask. He won’t let me do the shopping as he is weird about money and control, which is another issue entirely. I, I might add, am healthy and not in a shielding category.

What’s that about?"

I thought this was nonsense too. And I’m sure there was a similarly weird thread recently about a fat, lazy, “BAME” husband.

Yes who says their own husband is BAME!

Exactly! That’s why it doesn’t ring true to me. People don’t talk that way about their own husbands. I can say that categorically because my own husband is “BAME” 😄 and I wouldn’t use a dehumanising acronym (which is appropriate in certain contexts) to talk about him.

I’m confused that he’s supposedly incredibly fat but apparently doesn’t overeat? 🧐

My DH has had two diabetic-related appointments cancelled at the GP's recently so I did wonder if that was true when I read that the GP had been chasing him - that's not been our experience at all! However further down this reddit thread I see that it's been reported and apparently OK'd. My DH isn't shielded or vulnerable either.

Someone with high blood pressure and pre diabetic would be in the vulnerable group, but not in the shielded group. Criteria for shielded does not include being fat, chain smoking, controlling and stupid.

Yes rubbish. Prediabetes means change your lifestyle

Metformin is used in obese people with prediabetes. You're supposed to change your diet and exercise as well.

I thought metformin was only used if you have actual diabetes? I don't know. I just know my brother has diabetes, not pre diabetes, that is controlled just by diet. But I still think this post is not true.

Nope it can be used if you are prediabetic. I did a quick google and it's used in that way in the UK as well as here. Not all pre-diabetes can be controlled by diet and exercise.
