What can I do as a primarily top laner to help my team?

Question

I'm going to use my latest game as an example. I was playing Gnar into a Garen, pretty balanced matchup, we both had similar CS, and although I was able to trade blows harder, neither was really winning for an overwhelming majority of the laning phase. All the while, I would hear my team dying to either the mid laner or the jungler, while I remained 0/0/0 for a while.

Please bear in mind I'm not trying to take a moral high ground and claim "oh my team sucks, I'm actually a challenger but stuck cause of my team". I also recognize that I have flaws and am not particularly good at macro.

With that all in mind, what should I look to do as a top laner when I find a lane is struggling? What should I keep watch for, and to add onto that, when should I be rotating for objectives? In most cases, the enemy laner remains on top with me, so should I just ignore them and go for the objective, risking my laner getting plates or more cs?

I always found looking at the map and pinging where ever the jungler is is helpful.

If the lane is mad even and you cant push him there isnt much you can do other than trying to win the lane as much as you can. The more pressure you can bring on top the better. If the jungle showd up top IMO you are doing a team a solid by giving them moments of time to not worry about a gank. Also if you can do a quick shove to set up deep wards that is also helpful.

You can always look for the TP set up, just know if nothing comes from the TP play you are way more behind. In lower elos I found it more helpful to make sure I was ahead. Having a top lane who can split the map on their own is great.

So if you find that your team is dying to enemy jg but he doesn’t visit your lane then you might be playing “too safe.” Knowing your champ limits helps a lot, instead of freezing the lane to your side or always making sure the wave is in your favor, gain some decent vision to help you avoid a gank and push up just enough so you are pressuring the enemy to call for help and once you see the enemy jg coming for you just back off right away. Getting the enemy jg to gank you without you losing anything except a few CS or time helps your team out alot. Depending on your elo you’ll either want to play for lane dominance or more macro to help your team.

Once tower plating falls, top outer becomes worth less than basically any other objective. Now whether that means you tp for dragon or bot tower or w/e depends on a whole bunch of other situational things, but at least keep that in mind. Unfortunately, League is a team game, and there's only so much you can do as one of five, especially in the lane that has the least roaming potential. If you're going even in lane and the other lanes are being bopped, there's not much you can really do especially pre-14:00; the risk of roaming compared to the guaranteed 1-2 platings Garen would get off of it probably wouldn't be worth, unless you're confident that you can, say, help win a teamfight that secures dragon.

From my experience as a top secondary, I've usually found that the key to climbing in top is primarily to keep your opposing laner in check, which is the most consistent thing you can do to help your team; ensure that your opponent top laner doesn't become a hyper-fed monster. You becoming a hyper-fed monster is a secondary goal, of course. Unfortunately, this strat doesn't leave a whole lot of room for 1v9 carrying; unless your opponent forgot rule 1 and let you get so hyper-fed that you can get a 1v5 penta on Darius, if your teammates feed so much you can't do anything, that's kinda just how it be some games. Top lane kinda just be like that, I guess.

One creative play could be to reset after crashing a wave, then walk bot to try and make a play (almost like ganking as a jungler). If the play works, you've impacted the opposite side of the map. If it doesn't, just TP top and you won't miss too much CS.

best think you can do it try to take prio top lane for as much of the game you can. doing it early to basically guarantee your jgl the scuttle or be able to come down to contest and get a kill can be game ending sometimes

how do you avoid getting ganked?

make sure you know where the enemy jungler is on the map. for example, say your top comes to lane a bit late and the enemy jungler is an elise or j4. your top leashed and they started topside which means that they might level 2 gank you. based on this, try to play a little farther back than you would and try to get a river ward.jungle tracking is something that is very important for all lanes
