Moved out about a year and a half ago. This is my second place since then, but I've been having trouble making it feel like home. I think I'm close, but any advice, such as how to use up empty/wall space and how to add character/coziness, would be greatly appreciated (:

That coffee table has got to go!

Your bed looks sad. New bedding in a lighter color with a throw blanket and headboard would update the look. New coffee table, a mirror and plants would also add some life to your place. As your updating and adding to your place do it one step at a time. As you acquire things just take a step back and see if you really like it. Don’t shop for everything in a weekend.

Or, like, an actual bed frame. Even a basic one to get the mattress off the floor.

I agree with both comments. Perhaps in addition to the nightstand lamp I’d get a floor lamp. That overhead light just kills any sort of relaxing atmosphere. Artwork or tapestry for the walls. I full length mirror on the door will help as well.

I recommend a nightstand and lamp. Go for a warm white light bulb, maybe 25 watts.

And find string lights that you change with the seasons.

A splash of color would help. Posters, tapestry, lighting would work as well. At the moment the room looks very utilitarian because there's no apparent personal touches.

Some art would be nice. Maybe a bookshelf next to the keyboard if you have room.

Yeah, the picture doesn't show it well but my room has like a corner cut out of it, right next to the keyboard haha. It would be hard to put a bookshelf, or anything really, there. Definitely agree on the art!

I’ve got a few suggestions:

  1. Space permitting, move the dresser next to the door and the chest to the other side of the door. Then move the keyboard to the space that those two occupied. Once that’s done, move the TV slightly further from your desk.
  2. A headboard/bedframe and a throw, along with a new duvet cover.
  3. A plant and some art on the walls.
  4. 2 pillows on each side of the bed would look better and more put together and even one decorative pillow in the middle leaning upon those.
  5. The coffee table should go and not be replaced. It’s unnecessary.
  6. A bookshelf.
  7. A lamp that’s pretty.
  8. A geometric pattern rug to add vibrancy.

These are great suggestions. Congrats on moving out. Your place looks great for someone I'm assuming is young and doing it on their own. Part of thr fun will be the experiences you get as you slowly check off the items from this list. It seems very ho hum but that's what enriches life and it gives you some activities that have you interact with others.

For the plants ask your relatives and friends on Facebook if they have any plant cuttings. Ppl who don't will scroll right past it but those that do will be delighted to give you a cutting.

Mirrors, plants, some colorful art prints and lighter colours on the bed and rug would do wonders

I’d suggest lighter colours (bed spread?) and tossing that coffee table or at least moving it =)

I’d also suggest lots of posters and art!! Anything you enjoy, plants if you keep them alive! Maybe even a shelf beside that piano to put things on? I’d also suggest getting some lamps, lamp lighting hits different from room lighting and tends to make spaces more cozy from my experience =)

I think you can work with what you've got!

I'd move the dresser behind the door, TV where the dresser/ hamper are and then move the rug and coffee table to the end of the bed, the empty space where the TV is currently could use 1 large art piece, try to find something that picks up the brown in the coffee table and white in the TV stand to tie it together
