BLEACH Rewatch Week 12: Episodes 109-115 Discussion

First-Timer, subbed for episodes 110-115 and dubbed for 38-40

My thoughts on ep109 got grouped into my Bount arc reactions if that interests anyone.

But, you know, other than the fact that I got to assert dominance over degenerate-edgelord I did enjoy the Bount arc and it had quite a few “sore demo”s I would’ve missed otherwise, there’s another reason that I’m glad I didn’t skip it. It was more potential for me to find base images for my wallpapers, and that is exactly what happened for this one I made earlier today of Byakuya. So I hope you guys like it~

Episode 110

• Opening on our first look of the Hollow’s world in forever and… whoever the hell this is. Interesting.

• Orihime’s lesbian friend is honestly getting on my nerves, I’m all for Tatsuki kicking her in the face.

• lmao suddenly Isshin is actually Ishida. He whipped that needle and thread out of nowhere.

• This whole part was lol except for the fact that Tatsuki being able to see Soul Reaper stuff is totally going to be important now.

• lol so if the Bount arc was canon it would’ve had to squeeze into the span of two in-universe weeks huh? Unless anime version is trying to say this is two weeks after Bount arc because Ichigo said “he fought pretty hard without his power returning” and Uryu didn’t fight in the Soul Society arc after he lost his powers.

• Yes this dude is just casually breaking gravity.

• OH there’s Lirin and the boys, based on last week’s thread I thought they were only ever going to show up again in future filler arcs.

• Genuine what now? Anyways welp he’s probably going to be another Shinji in anime that I don’t like…

• Kon still has the Quincy mark on the back of his head. I am honestly surprised they are doing lowkey references to the Bount arc, you guys were talking like it was going to be completely ignored…

• Oh hey it’s afro dude. Zennousuke.

• Okay then Shinji was just introduced and he’s already going on the offensive. His creepy smile reminds me of Gin’s. I bet they’re working together?

• Oh fun.

• Oh fuck Hollow dude from the beginning spotted Kon.

• I should know him…? WAIT RIGHT THAT’S GRAND FISHER!

• Ohhh lovely Shinji gets to do spooky mask shit except he’s completely in control which makes it spookier. And he’s with some group called the “Visored”.

• Hoooooooboy Uryu’s dad is getting involved? …wait his voice is familiar now I need to look it--BRIGHTY-BOY HOLY SHIT.

• Oh nice new ED, it feels slower than the previous ones and it’s pretty like that.

• YESSSSS THERE ARE MORE GOLDENS. I was going to be so upset if that was just for the Bount arc, I love these omakes.

Well damn that is one hell of a start to an arc.

Episode 111

• God all I can hear is Brighty-boy when Uryu’s dad talks. I don’t like this, this is worse than Aizen and Max sharing a seiyuu…

• Not sure having Bount arc flashbacks instead of showing when Uryu actually lost his powers after his battle with Kurotsuchi when his dad is talking down to him was a fitting decision. I could see both parts being used, but not solely Bount arc for some reason?

• Hoh? …but of course his condition for doing so is for Uryu to not involve himself with Soul Reapers anymore. As in he wouldn’t be able to be friends with Ichigo anymore. That is a nope.

• Oh fuck that’s a Zanpakuto on Grand Fisher’s back isn’t it? So he’s one of these “Visored” too…?

• So how did Kon running away from Grand Fisher work out in the manga? I thought the other mod souls didn’t exist there, so Noba couldn’t have teleported him away, Lirin couldn’t have made Grand Fisher hallucinate being in a desert, and Kurodo couldn’t have fought him under the guise of Ichigo. Just cut right to… wait.

• *wild, confused hand gestures?*

• *pauses episode to think about this* Actually this explains a lot of things about Ichigo but man I did not see this coming. Wait… Forever ago, Byakuya was involved in two scenes where Ichigo was found to be extremely similar to someone (first Byakuya made a note of it himself, and then he had to tell Ukitake that they’re not the same person, IIRC?), was that person supposed to be Isshin this whole time?! Oh man if it is that is a wicked piece of foreshadowing.

• This is important apparently so I will make note of it.

• Yo whatever song that was that started up after Isshin said he’s there to kill Grand Fisher? That song is cool.

• Arc title namedrop! So that’s what “Arrancar” means.

• So Isshin is captain-level wow.

Episode 112

• Aaaand there goes Grand Fisher. Ichigo, your mom has officially been avenged.

• Isshin and Urahara seem to be old buddies? Or at least old acquaintances. Makes sense.

• Is Aizen behind the Arrancars?

• *immediately confirmed correct, lol*

• Lovely…

• New girl, Hiyori. She’s one of the Visoreds. And looks like a thug.

• Oh… Uryu agreed to his father’s “no more involvement with Soul Reapers” rule…

Episode 114

• God I will never tire of this Bankai outfit.

• Okay so my mom and sister were playing some game at the table while I was watching this episode (also at the table because I’m trying to work on not slouching all the time and it’s easier to do this at the table) and I let out a very audible “OH BOY” at this and had to explain to my mom what happened…

• Watching Ichigo and Orhihime get beat down like that was… not comfortable…

• Yoruichi whooping Yammy’s ass though? Hell yeah, that’s awesome.

• I really like the song that played when Yammy and… that name is too hard to remember I’m calling him Ulq… when Yammy and Ulq retreated.

• Okay with Urahara asking what Yoruichi’s “condition” was and everyone being all quiet I was not expecting her to just be completely stuffing her face with food.

• That bowl is bigger than her head, jeez.

• I don’t like seeing depressed Ichigo…

• …wait I know those voices…

• Oh man them just talking about “World of the Living” stuff while the students are staring at them is just… hide my face in my hands levels of

• Ah yes Rukia rock that stylish entrance.

Episode 115

• So is narrated recap just going to be the thing for now? And then there was more recap after that, too. Which I watched anyways.

• WAIT THEY WERE HAVING THAT CONVERSATION DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF SOME OTHER STUDENTS I thought Ichigo was in an empty classroom ahahahahahahaha.

• It’s “correction” time.

• AHAHAHAHAHAHA I LOVE HOW THEY GOT THE NARCICIST PART RIGHT FROM HIS DESIGN.

• Aight cool Ichigo is on his way to returning to his old self.

• …he’s gonna immediately fall for Matsumoto isn’t he? Yep.

• Isshin what are you doing…

• Wait Yuzu not you too!

• How in the hahahahahahahahahahaha.

• Oh boy, isn’t that just lovely.

• This drops immediately after Hitsugaya said Aizen having ten of them would spell the end of Soul Society. Welp. Welp welp welp.

Ok so for some reason I've always loved this part of Bleach, almost as much as the Soul Society arc and I'm not quite sure why. Maybe it was the teasing of new baddies, the character growth from most of the main cast, the new faction in the Vizards, or that the action is centered on Karakura town, I'm not sure. I just love it. Anyways, here are my thoughts:

Rewatcher, Dub

109- Ok so not gonna lie, I watched this episode with the Bount arc episodes so I thought it was filler and didn’t take any notes on it. It was probably the best part of the Bount arc tbh and not just because it was the end of it (though that certainly helped). The little snippets of key characters' lives before the start of the series were cool to see, although I'm not sure how canon they are. I liked how my boy showed up in the end to tease his appearance in the next episode, that made me excited to start the rest of this week's episodes.

• FINALLY WE’RE BACK IN CANON MATERIAL AND IT FEELS SOOOO GOOD

• Starting off strong with Hueco Mundo stuff, not sure what's happening here

• Hmmm is that who I think it is??

• Ohh yeah its Grand Fischer, I remember, we’re back for real now!

• Fun to see our high school pals up to their usual shenanigans

• OF COURSE Isshin sewed that charm onto Ichigo’s uniform

• Now this is the crafty Uryu we know and love, filler Uryu never used those sneaky gadgets with spirit pressure

• MAN what an episode to get fully back into canon material with, there’s a lot of good stuff coming and I’m very excited to jump back in.

• Oh yeah new ED, beautiful song with some great visuals teasing some of my favorite characters coming soon.

• There are some big spoilers for reveals coming very soon. On one hand it’s like “dude c’mon you could have waited like 2 episodes” but on the other hand it’s like we’re so close to that it isn’t a huge deal. Same thing happened with Ichigo’s “new” zanpakuto form in ED 2.

• Oh they not so subtly teased that reveal in the preview too lmao nice.

• I’m not entirely sold on this whole “Keep Isshin’s identity a secret” thing but alright. It's also been years since I first read this in the manga so if a fellow rewatcher could remind me why it's important that would be great.

• Ayyy Karin coming out strong! I'm glad Ichigo now knows that she knows.

First Timer

Episode 109 was a little confusing since I skipped the Bount arc, but luckily it doesn't come up much in the rest of the episodes. By the end of 109, I'm guessing we're basically back to where we were by the end of the last cannon arc.

Rukia's speech to Ichigo about becoming stronger was pretty cool after Ichigo had been dealing with inner conflict and lost that earlier fight. I like how we get to see the school again after so long.

Also, I know why Kon called Ichigo's dad dumb because of how he treats his daughters, but I laughed because I think he's a doctor :P

Rewatcher - Meet the new-old baddies

Sooooo yeah, I totally didn't watch the Bount Arc. I fully intended to, but whenever I had the time my Oculus just demanded *attention. I mean, Boneworks had a Zombie update this week, and I still haven't FC'ed any SAO themes in Beatsaber. O well, I guess.

• Blah blah, stuff that happened in Soul Society prior to Rukia's meeting Ichigo. It's fine that they're filling in little details like this, but it's also pretty boring.

• Ahhhhh crap. I shoulda watched the Bount Arc. As it is, this guy is familiar but I don't know a thing about him.

• Alriiiight, returning to the main story with more new characters that I actually remember something about. Shit's about to get crazy again, folks.

Ep 110

• The music during this opening scene is deliciously eerie. The discordant harmony, the way it repeats like a record skipping; Imma save this for some good Halloween music.

• O shit, wtf? Did Grand Fisher level up or something? Welcome to the Arrancar arc, where Hollows get to be people too.

• For real, Idk how anime characters ever finish school when they've gotta run away at the start of like every class. I try to imagine having to pull that shit when I was in HS and it never would have worked.

• Duuuude, Ichigo, what are you doing? I guess you didn't have a choice, but he was seriously just going on about how bad he wanted to go out and perv. You're to blame for whatever happens.

• Menos just casually entering like nbd ever since Ichigo out-leveled them. It's no fun if the trash mobs don't scale with the player.

• Okay fine, so it's the Vizard Arc for a little bit, but we'll get to the Arrancar stuff, don't you worry.

• Well, so much for Uryu being 'The Last Quincy. I applaud his Batman-esque efforts tho.

Ep 111

• Well go figure. Uryu's father may be an insufferable Elitist asshole, but he's actually a pretty good dude too. He's like Data or Spock, entirely consumed by logic but also totally OP. But it's nice to learn that his actions have all been meant for Uryu's good.

• Ohhhh hell yea! Ichidad is #1 dad, and also a Soul Reaper. How's that for a reveal?

• Can we just rename this whole part of the show "The Mask Saga?" One team needs to remove their masks to gain power, and the other needs to put them on; I feel like there should be a diplomatic solution available somehow.

• I wonder how long it's been since Isshin actualy unsheathed his sword? I mean, the guy's obviously retired or something, but that he's still kept himself informed makes it clear that he hasn't just been idling about; He's probably kept up some kind of training.

• It’s only fitting that he was a Captain. I guess 'big blades' run in the family, Ichigo lucked into some good genes.

• I'm really enjoying Urahara and Isshin over here talking about how everything is 'going according to plan' like 4D Chess masters. I wonder whose plan they'll wind up being a part of before this is over.

• Inb4 these two goofs are the real chessmasters.

• In addition to Humans, Hollows, Reapers, Arrancar, and Vizards, we now have whatever Chizuru is. It's definitely not normal and I'm afraid of it.

• I was wondering when Shinji would play the "It's for your own good" card. I mean, it's obviously something Ichigo needs to get a handle on and where else is he gonna get training? He should be begging to join them.

• Oh nice! I love this chick! She reminds me a lot of Genkai from Yu Yu Hakusho.

• Uryu's decision to restore his powers is all 'Determination and Pride' now, but it just begs the question of how he's gonna escape the bargain. He's not just gonna get them back and disappear from the show, after all.

• Did we really need a recap? Just sayin, not that much has happened.

• Ichigo's dad like "Fuck you for making me have to clean up your messes."

• Having dealt with freeloaders, I've gained a new respect for Kon and his knowing when to fuck off.

• It's good to see Karin not beating around the bush with Ichigo. After her antics with Urahara's gang it would be silly for her to avoid it any longer.

• That said, the family discussion is still far from over.

• ...How do I express this properly? I'll just gonna go die of excitement in a dark corner.

• Oh noooo! Tatsuki is fucked. Seriously fucked. And so is whoever shows up to rescue her. Fuuuuck.

• Orihime looks piiiiissed. Is this the first time we've seen her use her powers in full seriousness?

• Poor Tsubaki, ever the arrow that misses its mark.

Ep 114

• And just like that, Super Saiyan Bankai became the minimum level of power required to confront enemies. Here's looking forward to Bankais 2, 3, 4, and God.

• Goddamnit Ichigo, did you not watch Naruto when it aired alongside you? The Fox Hollow. Is. You. You can't just reject it. You see what happens when you try?

• Reinforcements have arrived! Here's hoping they're enough, because there's nobody left and I don't expect Isshin's gonna show up again so conveniently.

• Wait, are those freakin Senzu beans? I was only joking with the DBZ comparisons, you guys didn't need to take it so seriously.

• This has been exactly 56 seconds of Yoruichi stuffing her face. Not quite enough to call it a filler scene, but still roughly 5% of the episode.

• It's not even my house, but I'm still mad at Kon for breaking this window. Not cool, bro; that shit takes resources and effort to replace. And after his little spiel about being a considerate freeloader, too.

• I feel like these two coming in all battered together is gonna start some wild rumors. Or it would if there were anybody else in their class to gossip.

• Omg, I love these idiots. Any one of them could be a perfect 'transfer student,' but all of them at once is like an entire family of circus performers moving in at once. That said, they all pull off a school uniform remarkably well.

Ep 115

• "Did she just come in through the window??" Random extra characters asking the real questions. lol

• I'd almost forgotten what a great character Rukia is. Everybody's been trying to get Ichigo to talk about his issues to no avail, and then she just waltzes in and kicks his ass into a situation where he's forced to confront them. Way to get his head on straight, girl.

• It would appear that Kon too is a man of culture. I may dislike the majority of his being, but we are still brothers.

• This family, I swear. They've got an...interesting dynamic.

• I've definitely missed Rukia's educational illustrations.

• That explanation for this team existing is a delightfully roundabout story, this episode has been pretty funny. Which probably means that they're cramming in as many good feels as they can before everything goes to hell again.

• We're playing "Who's that Hollow?" now? I just enjoy that they've got a silhouette like it's supposed to be a mysterious figure; We definitely didn't see anyone who looked like that last episode.

• More silhouettes, and oh look! There's 10 Vasto Lordes present, and Aizen clearly rules over them! I guess the Soul Society is doomed then, gg all.

• 109 is filler so I skipped it.

• Remember Kurumadani Zennouske? Probably not, because he was introduced in the omakes but he finally makes his canon debut!

• Yeah, there is a name for people that have Hollow Masks and Ichigo isn't the only one.

• Grand Fisher is back and wanting revenge!

• With all the gadgets Uryuu is basically Batman but in white clothes and without the mask.

Episode 111

• Ugh, I kinda forgot that they integrated the filler characters so much in these episodes and that their scenes where so long. I now see how I legitimately thought that the Bount arc was canon back in the day.

• Yesssss, finally we have the Isshin reveal!

• You guys just got two new terms in these 2 episodes: Visoreds and now Arrancars.

• The Spanish OST for the Arrancar Saga is so freaking good. It just puts a smile on my face. Anyways, when Grand Fisher starts talking about how he is an Arrancar the OST playing is "La Distancia Para un Duelo" (the distance for a duel in Spanish). • Ichigo, you aren´t that good at keeping your double life a secret if Karin already figured it out.

• Ulquiorra Cifer, Arrancar and also an emo. I mean, look at those eyes.

• Yammy Llargo, Arrancar.

• Inoue using her Santen Kesshun and Souten Kisshun was super badass, it's a shame that her attacking ability is pure trash.

• Also, Orihime's "healing" is more time/space reversal. I thought this was revealed later in this arc but I misremembered.

• Byakuya making a joke about cutting his hair with Senbonzakura in the omake.

Episode 114

• Man, the colored manga spreads are awesome. For the chapter adapted on this episode we had both fanservice and manservice. I would've liked to do a compilation of these but it's hard to get all of them since some sources don't include them when reading the manga. There is one album in imgur but it's full of spoilers so I can't share that and I'm too lazy to start one from scratch.

• They couldn't censor Yammy's arm being cut off because it would've been stupid to do so, but they managed to avoid showing the exact moment when Ichigo cuts it like in the manga.

• Man, I love Yoruichi and Urahara so much.

• Really glad the animation quality went up in the action sequences.

• If you hadn't realized yet with the Soundtrack and the terms they use (Pesquisa, Hierro, Suerte, Cero) the Arrancars are Spanish themed. Arrancar itself is a Spanish word, just that its intonation is different.

• You know an anime is stalling when they show you almost a minute of someone eating without being really relevant.

• Rejoice! Rukia is back with Renji, Hitsugaya, Rangiku, Ikkaku and Yumichika.

Haha. Ok already rewatched the episodes.

My gosh. The difference between this and the Bount arc is immediate. The story and pacing etc are already better than the entire bount arc with these first few episodes.

Already onto next weeks episodes since I enjoy watching every episode.

And we come to the Arrancar arc, or as it was known at the time, the arc that had the worst timing for its filler because KT's work translates to really quick movements. We saw with the Grand Fisher that losing your mask and gaining the Zanpaktou did make you stronger but now, apparently, we are getting Aizen's version. And my version of course says Hogyuko. Is there any consensus on the translation? The speed scan used 'orb of distortion'.

So...I understand using Grand Fisher here, but I simply couldn't care about this sequence. Isshin reveals one of the secrets of the show, at least, but there is definitely a ton left unsaid. Anything with the other mod souls stuff risks being anime original so...feh.

But then Yammy and Ulquiorra show up. And Yammy really fails to impress. Sure he has a lot of power, but not talent, and you expect Urahara is just going to job him until Ulquiora interferes, deflecting an attack from Benihime barehanded. And then they go back to see Aizen somewhere in Hueco Mundo. With their being 20 of them.

Bonus points today that someone pointed out that Ulquiorra and a Unicorn character share the same VA. Thankfully, Ulq isn't a lame plot device so I will soon forget that association.

• ..and then Yammy and Ulquiorra show up to fuck his day up some more
• Chad got one shotted by Yammy, Orihime tried her best to be useful, but Yammy too strong for her, crushed Tsubaki with little effort
• Ichigo with the last minute save before Orihime died

• Ichigo was doing pretty well, until his inner hollow started to try and take over again. A recurring theme I must admit gets old rather fast
• Kisuke and Yoruichi coming in clutch with the save
• Yoruichi has an impressive appetite lol, shades of the Saiyans and Luffy although not quite at their level
• lol and of course here comes Renji, Rangiku, Capt. Hitsugaya, Ikkaku and Yumichika posing as students...and of course Rukia.

• Rukia always setting Ichigo straight, she kicked his out of his moping around and gave him a hell of a speech

I definitely see what our noble host has against the fillers now. I still stan Zanpakutou Tales arc, though.

I've been meaning to mention this: I love how much Renji's facial tribal tattoos date him and the series. It so perfectly identifies the time the anime/manga takes place in, even moreso than the crappy flip phones everyone is using.
