After lots of time designing, testing, and a little help from reddit, it's done. A 3D jigsaw puzzle of the Grand Canyon.

Good job! Almost all my attempts to make simple joints were unsuccessful and you are making puzzles!
Here's the link for it on prusaprinters: https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/35630-grand-canyon-jigsaw-puzzle-3d-topographic-map
This comment contains a link to prusaprinters.org/prints, which may be distributing .gcode files. While running a .gcode file may seem easier, it is very dangerous, as it can contain malicious code that could cause wasted filament, printer damage, or even worse. If you'd like to learn more, Thomas Sanladerer made a great video on the topic.

Nice use of puzzle technology. Allows storage in a small box too.
Very cool!
I’ve been meaning to look into this. Would it work with a cityscape or is it best with just terrain?
A simpler (square tile) approach has been done before:
I'm sure a bit of digging would lead to an open-source way of using Google data to drive import into modelling software for STL generation. The cool thing is that most buildings would naturally not require supports.
These guys took an interesting approach to extracting Google data; 3D photogrammetry...

Yes yes yes this amazing thank you, just what I’m looking for!
I don't know if it's possible to include buildings. I know Google Earth has 3d data on that but I don't know of any way of making it printable.
I took a class on GIS through Linkedin Learning, and they actually showed how some cities (Canada) have outlines for all the buildings in a city. They showed how to generate a rough slightly boxy 3d model by imputing number of stories and establishing rough heights. Some pretty innovative options are available.
Now to paint each stratum... right?
How’d you do this, if you don’t mind me asking? LIDAR or topo, and how’d you convert to printable file? Very cool.
Haha.. there won't be any painting, although you could change filament every few layers to get that effect.
I use an awesome tool from Iowa State University called TouchTerrain (https://touchterrain.geol.iastate.edu), which takes elevation data and automatically converts it to STL files. There are some other online tools too, but this is my favorite.
Do you have any other tips for making it into a puzzle? Great idea, I'd love to try and make one for local terrain
edit: just noticed your description on the prusaprints website, I'll give it a go. I don't suppose you could upload the puzzle cuts SVG and what settings you used on touchterrain?
I wrote about more about how I did it on the prusaprinters. Maybe I'll post the cutting template too.
Ok thanks a lot, yeah just noticed that.
Here's the cutting tool on PrusaPrinters. https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/35724-jigsaw-puzzle-cutter-template
The TouchTerrain settings are pretty self explanatory. Plus, you can always resize the model in 3d builder.

Thanks a lot for that, I'll give it a shot
Ugh, wish I'd known about this as I printed the Grand Canyon for my father for Christmas. I did tons of searching and never came across ISU's tool.
