Should I email regarding an opportunity?

Last year, I (20f engineering student) shadowed an engineer as part of a program. Now, his company is hiring interns for Fall. Should I email him saying i’m applying? If yes, how should I email him— what should i say? He is pretty young (late 20s) and is a level 2 engineer. Thanks!
