Avery & Omar

I'm getting caught up on Avery and Omar's season of Before the 90 Days at the moment. I've been reading through the discussion posts every episode and I need to talk. I've seen a lot of people say that they aren't rooting for Avery and Omar, and/or that Omar is not emotionally invested in Avery.

So far, they're one of my favorite couples. I may have a soft spot for them because Omar reminds me a lot of my own husband or maybe because Avery was a friend of my sister's in high school. I just want to defend them.

My husband grew up being told that men don't show emotion and yada yada, similarly to Omar. I have no doubt that my husband does love me and I really don't doubt that Omar does love Avery. Sometimes when men grow up being told that men need to be strong, they can seem entirely shut off from their emotions but I think they just show them in different ways. When my husband and I have been separated for an extended period of time, he's never cried but showed his feelings in other ways. Like Omar, he would tell me not to cry, kiss my forehead, wipe away my tears. To me, it's clear that Avery and Omar love each other, they just have different ways of showing it.

Now Avery. I'm about 80% sure that I met her one day I was picking up my sister from school but I won't swear to it. However, I did ask my sister about her when I connected all of the dots. My sister said that she is a very sweet girl but has always been impulsive and not exactly the brightest, though she did work hard. She became Muslim kind of on impulse- she met a guy and converted for him but when they broke up, she decided she would keep her religion. Her mom did the best she could but worked a lot to provide for her family and give them the best lives she could. (If I remember correctly, Avery totaled her brand new Jeep that her mom bought her on prom night.) I imagine some of her impulsiveness could come from wanting more attention but that's just my thought. All in all, I really want the best for Avery because she does seem sweet (deep down) and I remember the way I thought of my own self when I was her age- I know it all and nothing can hurt me.

Anyway. Thanks for listening to me ramble. I just needed to rant, I guess.

She seems sweet and I'm glad he has a degree and a good job.

Honestly, he's doing a lot better for himself than most of the people on the show!

Agreed! He’s a victim of his passport. If he was a dental student with almost any other passport they would just finish up his education and not have to worry very much at all

I wish it wasn’t true but you’re absolutely right.

Totally behind these two (though I originally thought Avery was crazy), and I will say she the rocks the hijab like nobody’s business, gorgeous.

Edit: spelling.

She looked so gorgeous in her wedding dress

I assume you don’t mean the Ewok weird hooded thing from that very strange “wedding.”....Avery is beautiful and I really wish them the best.

HA no that was an atrocity. I meant her grey/silver dress and hijab combo

She sure does pull a hijab off

This couple is sincere.

They truly care for each other and are a great example of putting partners needs first.

Plus, they both respect each other’s parents and that helps out a lot.

Yep! It’s really tough to have any relationship, especially a marriage, when your partner doesn’t respect or care for your parent.

I think this sub in general likes this couple. I haven't seen much Avery/Omar hate, tbh.

Back when the season was on seemed like most of us thought they’d break up because Avery was said by her family to be impulsive like OP said, and make drastic choices and give up on them like being vegetarian and sneaking chicken. She was also criticized for wearing too short and tight of a dress on the tell-all.

Her sticking with her religion and their relationship lasting is a pleasant surprise. A rare success story! It’s very heartwarming.

I apologize! I haven’t been on the sub much, other than for the post episode discussions. I saw a lot of people saying how stupid they thought Avery was and that they thought something was off with Omar on the discussion I was recently on.

My reservations about them was I felt they were mismatched personality wise - Avery is quite loud and "American" (not a criticism, just a cultural difference), Omar is quite reserved and very culturally Syrian. I also feel like although they are close in age, there is a maturity gap due to the different life experiences. Omar would have lived through the Syrian war through his teens and although I'm not sure how the situation was in Latakia during its peak, I am sure he has been affected and lost people he has known. Avery - although well meaning and clearly willing to embrace his culture - comes across as childish at times. I have lived a similar and impulsive life to Avery so I'm not bashing her choices at all and I enjoyed her "I'm either naive or I'm right" line.. but in my case I was naive and very very wrong, so I hope this will not be the case for her. Omar seems like a good man so I am rooting for them to overcome the odds stacked against them.

I still can’t stand her for some reason. Wish her all the best I hope I don’t have to see them again on tv.

She seems to be annoyingly attention-seeking.

She seems to be a bit tiring to have around.

Agreed.

Omar seems so patient and kind, and Avery seems really set on making it all work out, including being Muslim.. I really hope they work out.

I get Avery. Although it’s been more than 20 years ago I was a wild, reckless, and homeless teenager. I bounced from guy’s house to friend’s house. And one day I woke up and was like I’m going to end up just like my mom-always looking for the next party. I changed that day. I met someone, had kids, built a successful business, and moved states. When we go home to visit people still don’t believe the change in me. I know she has stated that she was unhappy with herself and the choices she was making so her conversions to Islam doesn’t surprise me. I’m wishing both of them the best.

I think it will be hard for her in a few years when her friends are all out partying and she is home with a baby or two. I can't help but feel like this is a "adventure" for her and she has some romanticized notion of her life living in an exotic country, being married, and playing dress up with hajibs and burkas.

BloodAngel85•

She's definitely in for a rude awakening

I'm watching her on Before the 90 Days. I can't believe she's thinking of moving to Syria of all places. There's so much going on over there and I hope they maybe find a safer country for the both of them soon.

8
Merrenmia•

She should watch For Sama or The Cave before moving there.

I've been a fan of this couple since day one. I agree with you about Omar! He seems like a really good dude tbh

I liked them from the jump. Avery seemed like she needed something to guide her through some personal growth and if that's a new religion, so be it. I got major opposites attract from them as a couple, she seems fun and spontaneous and he seems like a career-driven planner. I'm all for them!

8
shadesofvanilla•

Avery seems like a total shapeshifter. Like she has no identify of her own and tries to fit into something. Now it’s being a Muslim. Like when they said she wanted to be a vegetarian but would sneak meat up in her room and eat it. She just wants to be a part of some group so badly.

I'm so glad! I hadn't been able to find a whole lot about them online so I guess no news is good news lol

As an aside, I agree with Avery choices. She’s faced a lot of criticism for her conversion but when she asked her mom, “would you rather me be drinking and dressing provocatively?” she was absolutely right. She made a positive, albeit easy misunderstood choice for her life. Go Avery and Omar!

6
Dark_Colossus7•

My favorite couple actually. Even though she is still really young you can tell she is maturing and she has always been respectful to Omar, his family and his culture .

6
gangstafemale•

I love this couple! I think their differences will actually make them a strong couple. Avery replied to some of my comments on their IG, and was always so sweet. I truly hope they make it.

5

I watch the show with my mom and she agreed that they may be one of the only couples on TOW that might actually make it. When Avery met her MIL that was so touching. She loved them and they loved her so authentically. It was really beautiful. I'm rooting for them!
