Hey, Lancaster shippers. Got a minute?
Jumping right in, I'm brainstorming a fic I've recently started, trying out different twists. But I'm having some difficulty wrapping my mind around an idea; what would the tipping point be for Jaune to fall for Ruby romantically?
Yes, that does sound simple, but I don't mean Ruby's qualities in general. She's a flat character, they don't really change. If that's all it took for Jaune to fall for her, then it would have happened a long time ago. This plot point needs to develop more recently on the fic timescale. I know his physical attraction would likely change over the years, but it's too shallow for a meaningful plot point. And their lack of personal friction/conflict works against them. The story is set with the canon story as the backdrop. So I'm sort of stuck in working out a believable catalyst towards the romantic.
So instead of trawling through Lancaster fics for ideas, I'm hoping to talk directly to the source. So Lancasters, what would be an inciting incident that shifts Jaune's perspective on Ruby?
Edit: Just to be more clear on the timeline - story is set after the current Atlas Arc, and conflict in Vacuo. If that helps.

Listen, for what I've seen, you understand romance better than I do. But, off the top of my head I would say you can work around their hug in volume 6. Not necessarily using the scene per say, but sort of having Jaune realizing Ruby is more special to him than he thinks by having them split for a while in a dangerous situation. You can also work around her inspiring him to be better like she did in volume 1 and volume 4.
Honestly, I struggle with male POVs when it comes to romance. I'd love to say we all approach romantic attraction in familiar ways, but there are differences. Best I can do is research different perspectives.
Hmm, something like the Ruby being in danger and then the intense relief when he finds out she's okay could work. I forgot to consider protective instincts. Thanks! I'll add it to the list!
That is if you want a clearer and intense trigger. You can be overwhelmed by emotions easily in situations of danger. The degree of intensity of the reaction is what would determine how much love is behind them. For instance, the way Jaune reacted to Weiss being impaled showed emotional intensity, but he saw her as a friend at the time, still, the event showed that he still loves her even in a platonic way. If you want to make it explicitly romantic, dial up the intensity of the reaction.
Notice as well that I didn't say "put Ruby in mortal danger", I used the V6 hug because eventhough Ruby wasn't particularly hurt or anything, Jaune spent a day away from her and the uncertainty and worry gave him an intense response when he saw her well. You can get such reactions without falling in tropes like the "person in mortal perril" like the Weiss scene.
This is just an option of course. A catalyst to knowing you have feelings for someone can be as simple spending a joyous moment with them and not being able to stop thinking about a person. What's the trigger there? Depends on what happened before and during the event. Of course that's a more subtle approach and can be a bit hazy.
Yep, sudden danger seems to be the go to, going by the thread consensus. Separating from Jaune's typical reaction is the trick - he would react the same way to all his friends, like he does when Weiss is stabbed. More so if he has a hand in the danger, and in this fic he is part of the threat.
But yeah "mortal danger" is somewhat cliche. Just injuring Ruby is too easy, even if I have Jaune be the one to hurt her. I want to avoid that if I can help it. Intense relief would be more inline with what I want.
I'm floating ideas on how Jaune shakes off what's effectively a geas placed on him. I thought of three ways to go about it:
For the first I was playing with either a friend's repeated attempts to reach Jaune (say Ren), or an unexpected source pulls Jaune out of it, which would be Emerald. The second one is the subject of this thread. His realization of love for Ruby is what smashes through the hold on him. It doesn't necessarily need to be Ruby, but she fits the best considering history. And the third option is well, too easy and not ideal. It is tidy, could add a ton of motivation to Ruby, but it's almost a reverse fridging.
So it's kind of a toss up between 1 & 2. A slow peeling back of the restraints on his mind, or a sudden snapping of them instead.
It sounds like a really good concept, I find it really interesting.
Both of those scenarios are preferable to the third one like you said, and I would argue that neither excludes a romantic or platonic element so you have plenty of leeway.
For instance, option 1 works well with Ren, but if Jaune is meant to have feelings for Ruby, her being the one who constantly reminds him about who he is would make sense as she would be the one who could get through him the best.
Option 2 works well with intense emotions towards friends and family. If you could use one of his sisters it would work but Jaune also sees Ren and Nora as family, them being in danger would trigger an intense emotional response as well.
I like the concept you seem to be looking for, would like to see your take on it.
frankly, the best moments in fiction were friends become lovers is when things just click in the right way simply put Ruby and Jaune start seeing each other romantically but it's and not as apparent to their of them until one thinks about
