Only if it powers your computer 😄

The cyclists that do the 60 minutes competition (that is, doing the most kilometers in 60 minutes in a bike track), are able to pull 300W continious. A good desktop computer can easily suck up to 500 watts, screen not included. Your average good laptop could be sucking arround 60-100 watts...

I think it would be hard to make it work. Even during short spans of time.

32
ATWindsor•

It could suck up 500 watt peak, but that is a very thirsty computer. That being said, I don't think it is realistic, there is quite a bit of loss in making it into electrical energy as well.

15
Maipmc•

The problem is in the variabylity of the power needs. Any machine can have pretty big instant power needs. My computer can suck up to 700watts but its base consumption is way lower.

3
LorenOlin•

What kind of rig are you running that pulls 700w? Must be pretty beefy.

6
BumpitySnookWA, USA•

500W is extremely high for a modern desktop computer (i.e., not a Threadripper or Core i9 or something like that; no 2080Ti Super). Usually power supplies are oversized to peak load and average load is much lower.

60-100W is extremely high for a 2008 laptop. Modern laptops (2018) are at single-digit watts while on and idle: https://reductionrevolution.com.au/blogs/news-reviews/laptop-power-consumption-wattage-macbook-pro-air

7
eruditionfish•

I think the 60-100W figure was derived from the typical laptop charger, which is around that wattage. But a laptop charger obviously provides more power than the laptop uses, otherwise it wouldn't charge.

4
TopGas•

But don't forget the inefficiency. 300W output does not translate into 300w input

2
TungstenTurban•

300w is pretty low, even amateurs can break that for an hour (think FTP). The Aussie amateur guy did 380w for an hour.

If you can work entirely from a tablet though, that could be a goer.

1
LZmiljoona•

Maybe if they switch to an ARM-based macbook that should come out relatively soon, it will be easier!

1
scannerJoeOP•

That would be so very awesome.

4
Temuma•

You can allways try Raspberry Pi 4. It does't need much power.

Danielfhjhgf•

That’s a good idwa

Since I miss biking to work so much, I am now starting my work day on my standing desk / stationary bike combo. It's obviously not the same thing, but it does scratch the itch at least a tiny bit.

24
Tipsy247•

What's the Stationary bike's brand name

myrealnameisboring•

Where is this long and arduous commute? From the limited details in the photo, I'm going to guess... Paris?

6
scannerJoeOP•

Lisbon!

6
myrealnameisboring•

Nice! I love Lisbon. I've always dreamt of relocating there or Porto from London. My mum and her family are originally from Goa, and it seems like I could potentially get Portuguese citizenship if I jumped through some administrative hoops.

Good old foreigners filling our houses /s

brada1703•

God damn! I thought I recognized the architecture! Just thought scanner Joe wasn't the most Portuguese of names. Perhaps you should change it to scannerJoão ;)

1
MferOrnstein•

Where did you bought this or is it diy? É mesmo.isto q preciso

1
scannerJoeOP•

It's this model (although I did not get the stand). Comprei aqui.

That’s what you call telecommuting.

Telebikecommuting.

3
[deleted]•

You could do a big loop in the morning as a commute? Benefits of good bike storage and shower at work as well.

13
scannerJoeOP•

Yeah, I've been riding more outside of work, but bikecommuting has that sweet scent of having to do something, but enjoying it at the same time. A combination of the necessary and the pleasant. You know, like tricking "the man". My setup tries to capture a little bit of that.

More like r/bikecomputing

12
brada1703•

Wait... What? Is that chair real? If so, what's the make and model? And... Is it comfortable?

7
scannerJoeOP•

It's actually just a stationary bike without handle bars, but designed to blend more nicely into a living environment. It's also super slim (~20cm/8" with the pedals folded up) and can be stowed away easily. That's the model (although I got it without the stand).

I would not sit on the thing the whole day, but 2-3 hours is no problem at all.

17
brada1703•

That's cool! Thanks a lot for the link and info!

what this guy said :) ☝️

Only if you open the balcony door. You cant really call it a ride without fresh air

4
BikingVikingNYC•

How tall are you and how high does the seat go?

6'-5"/195cm here and curious

3
scannerJoeOP•

I am 183/6" and I'm using it on the highest setting already. At your height, you'd probably have to bend your knees too much for it to be comfortable, I fear.

6
BikingVikingNYC•

Alas... Thanks!

1
aNova1•

Op, can you post some closeups of the seat? I'm 6'4 and wonder if one could mod it.

Zoom meetings will get a lot more breathy.

Wow this is a great idea. Makes me want one. It looks super easy to store too!

Uplift desk?

2
scannerJoeOP•

It's a FlexiSpot E7. A little cheaper, but pretty sturdy.

3
skidawgz•

I believe I spy a Keychron keyboard

2
scannerJoeOP•

Would be nice, but it's a Velocifire with cheap Dolch key caps.

2
frodo838•

May I ask what keyboard you have there?

2
HopkirkDeceased•

Off topic but, what speakers are those?

1
scannerJoeOP•

These are wharfedale diamond 11.0. Cheaper (even including the amp) than the Audioengine A2 I had before and much, much better sounding.

2
2pedalsandapbrsf, ca || 2017 surly straggler•

Also off topic, but keyboard info?

2
scannerJoeOP•

It's a Velocifire TKL02WS. Since I use the KVM that's built into my monitor to switch between computers, I needed a KB with USB dongle, not Bluetooth, but I'm pretty happy with it overall.

3
2pedalsandapbrsf, ca || 2017 surly straggler•

thank youuuuu!

Thanks :)

Why not? 😂😂

Love the setup! What electric desk is that? I miss my standing desk at the office and commuting via bike so this pic really hits home!

1

It's a FlexiSpot E7. Pretty happy with it!

Great set-up. Love the bike stool.

Mac really got the bang for his buck with that $14. Asspounder 2000 looks sleek as hell. ~ IASIP.

1
Calinevawash•

That looks stinky

1
theearthmoonandsun•

This looks really nice, well done. I want to create something like this for myself as well. While you are cycling, is it still possible to effectively use your keyboard? Or is it harder because you do make some (small) movements when cycling actively?

Thx for the inspiration.

1
scannerJoeOP•

I am certainly typing more slowly, but I'm a pretty bad typist to begin with. But I've only used the setup for a couple of days now and things may still improve.
