WhY cAnT wE gEt ThIs In ThE u.S?

Here’s why Kyle, because BMW know enough about consumers to know the average US driver ain’t gonna trade in their ‘99 Accord for a 500BHP £100,000 estate car.

Wasn’t expecting £100,000. Ouch. How the fuck does anyone who isn’t independently wealthy afford these. There’s engineers at my office driving m3s and m4s. Are they selling coke on the side or do project leads make like 200k a year?

Or am I just insane for not wanting to spend half my income on a car payment?

This applies to me, and I love the acronym. Gonna use this one for sure haha.

The only way I can make it work is assuming they invested extra smart in the past and can now coast with their retirement investments, and already bought a home. It could work then. Assuming the other car was much more reasonable.

More like no need to spend half your time and money on them. The necessary SUV/minivan is just a small part of the equation.

Yeah I was operating on the above post and thinking 100k, 60-70 is definitely more feasible for the guys that already are in their “forever” home etc.

I’m mostly tied to M-H COL areas though, so it’s gonna take 5-10 years of 1-2k a month to buy a home (I’m risk averse so I want 20% + closing + 20k in cash for shit that breaks) once student loans are paid off. I’ll make it there by my late 30s, I’m not sweating it.

I’m semiconductors, they don’t make as much as petro except the PhDs, but still a good industry. Math checks out now, I had invalid initial conditions ;)

I’m still keeping my 10k BRZ until student loans are completely done. Then probably a newer BRZ (gen2? Edelbrock supercharger?) or 370z until I have handled wedding, >15% retirement contribution, and down payment.

Maybe a second hand cayman if I can get a new enough one <30k to be able to daily it for 8yrs. If not, no worries, there’s a ton of cool cars between 20 and 30.

Besides, being from rural Appalachia I’d feel like a complete douchebag visiting home in a fancy German car ;)

Edit: 4 years? Damnit I did 6! Knew I fucked up somewhere! I did physics for undergrad though so although I have an EE masters, I’m not cut out to do design work, hence why I’m in semiconductors which fits nicely between EE and my quantum focus from UG.

Now if only I remembered how to do calculus after 4 years not using it...

I destroy the planet on a consulting basis, and i can easily afford at least a couple fancy new cars too.

I know welders earning £100,000 a year, but they work tons of hours and hardly spend any time at home. They have £70,000+ cars and £250,000+ houses. It’s called finance. Or of course they could have side gigs like selling beak. Every little helps.

My car costs a fifth of my monthly income. That’s enough for me. I could of gone and gotten a C63 or something daft like that, but nah, I wanna live too. I enjoy going to the boozer with my mates, and doing other fun stuff like going away. I’d not be able to afford to do any of that if I’d bought a C63, along with my other bills.

But obviously it’s all priority. If someone wants to spend 2/3 of their monthly income on a M4, that’s up to them. As long as they’re happy, who cares, they also get to snort yeti legs off their fancy M4 dash board, win, win!

8
maverickmonkmetal•

I’m just saying, I know I’m a cheap bastard with my cash bought car. Realistically I could make payments on a car that’s (I’m American), $30,000 without being in “eat a shotgun for retirement” territory.

But I’m also a well compensated engineer. (I’m fairly junior, but earn OT)

How the fuck are people spending $1000-1500 a month on a car note and sleeping at night? Even assuming I didn’t have student loans, I’d literally never be able to buy a home.

I parked next to an RS5 today. How the hell?

Edit: I’m totally stealing yeti legs as a slang term now.

RonaldRaingan2020 Mercedes-Benz A35 AMG•

Simply because they’re more successful than you and me, and have better careers, and of course the ability to finance. Doesn’t necessarily mean they’re dealing drugs on the side.

There are a lot of high paying jobs out there other than engineering.

14
MogwaiInjustice•

I mean good welders are a high skill job with good demand.

2
RonaldRaingan2020 Mercedes-Benz A35 AMG•

For sure man, I’m a pipe welder myself.

2
CodyHodgsonAnon19•

Most of the welders i know who make that sort of money, own their own rigs and have a couple hundred thousand dollars invested in a truck they can roll to where it's needed, with the equipment required.

And even still...not everyone is a welder, obviously. Where are normal people supposed to come up with the money for a car like this?

0
RonaldRaingan2020 Mercedes-Benz A35 AMG•

That and overtime. I can pull £70,000+ if I work ridiculous hours and night shifts, but that’s not for me, I’m happy earning what I earn working 38 hour weeks. This depends on the individual and their own personal financial situation of course.

Your question has already been answered higher up in the thread. Its finance/ payment plans.

Not sure where you’re from but it’s pretty simple to get finance on a £70,000 car in England and make payments over 5 years. As long as you’re earning £30,000+ a year and have good credit, you can own a £70,000+ car. Not difficult in the slightest. In England I reckon over half the cars on the road are lease or PCP.

It’s not hard to believe in the slightest.

M3s and M4s are quite a bit cheaper.

6
maverickmonkmetal•

Ok, I knew those numbers didn’t add up. 70k is still unfathomable to me but I can see how a more senior engineer than me could make one work without being financially stupid (because let’s be honest, it’s a risk averse profession, which is why this notion surprised me. I don’t know any engineers who would put 30-50% of their paycheck into a car lol). Assuming they already put a down payment on their house of course

I'd wager that many of them are leased. My dad leased a current-generation M3 for $750 a month.

2
redisburning•

a staff level engineer at an enterprise tech company can easily afford the monthlies and incidentals on a car like this.

at both my current and last place staff was well over 200k a year. my last place had some individual contributor roles above 300. Im in Austin so YMMV.

Im in data science / MLE and our roles are a little less lucrative, but I personally own an M4. no need to sell coke.

coming from a well-to-do family definitely helps not going to lie though.

6
Cryptic06772019 Genesis G70 3.3T•

Suddenly concerned that I'm underpaid at staff level in Austin...

I agree with the rest of your post though, shopping for G80 M3 in the next few years, or maybe an M2

1
redisburning•

Hey man general advice is if you feel underpaid then start interviewing. Gotta change gigs to get the raises.

That being said salary variance in town seems ludicrous. I interviewed at a BIG place that could afford to pay the $$$ and didnt but then wondered why I (and from asking around, apparently rather a lot of people) turned them down for the in-person after asking about salary.

Also the M2 is about to get a refresh better pray to Bangle it doesnt get the same treatment.

2
keepitonehunnid9•

don't assume everyone is super wealthy or doing better than you, there are TONS of people out there that are just straight up financially irresponsible and stretch themselves paper thin on credit. I bought a new M2 - for my situation an easily affordable car but not "cheap" by any means. Joined a local club of owners and was surprised at how many guys age 18-21 have one. They live with their parents and spend all their income on the car, lol.

3
maverickmonkmetal•

Oh for sure!

That’s why I mentioned engineers though, we aren’t exactly an irresponsible profession. Hell half of us save ketchup packets and re-use ziplocks ;)

I just didn’t realize how much these things cost, I assumed they were like 50k new, which seemed totally reasonable for a well heeled engineer, didn’t realize they were 75, but on doing the math it looks like it could be safely done for someone farther along their career. They aren’t my kind of car anyway though, just a thought exercise

I get the math behind it, but I wish companies, especially those as large as BMW or Toyota, would appease the enthusiasts a little more by offering more body styles or drivetrain options.

I bought a brand new F80 M3. Was totally planning on ordering a G80 when they released until I saw the styling. Looking at other options instead now. I think that BMW will genuinely lose a lot of their US costumer base due to the styling. I don’t know a single person who’s excited about it.

same.

will be buying a new vehicle late next year or early the year after. was definitely going to just get another M3/M4 but now... think Ill look at something else. maybe the 718 gts 4.0 or the carrera S. yeah it's more money but the Carrera S is getting into previous gen supercar territory so maybe it's worth it.

It’s all subjective isn’t it. These new BMW grilles are so fucking in your face and flashy it’s actually making me cringe seeing them.

They’re essentially gigantic, in your face chrome intakes, and that applied to any car isn’t a good look.

But of course some must like them because I’m seeing people driving around in them.

6
MultitronicOP•

Surface area wise I doubt they are any bigger than Audi or Mercs newest designs. Problem is, they are wider and the BMW one taller which makes it look funny.

6
RonaldRaingan2020 Mercedes-Benz A35 AMG•

Yeah, you’ve just explained why they look so bad, because they’re tall and don’t really follow the lines of the front of a car.

Mercedes grilles do, they’re horizontal in shape, and simply look better. Merc grilles always have done.

BMWs are vertical, and when they was smaller they looked great, but now they’re massive, take up almost the entirety of the front of the car, and just look dumb as fuck.

But beauty is in the eye and all that...

3
MultitronicOP•

Yeah they do look out of place. But it’s growing on me tbh. Maybe some aftermarket companies will make nee front ends for them.

For some reason I think the beaver teeth grille looks pretty good in this specific instance with the camo.

3
opus6662009 Miata•

Say what you will about the Bangle Butt, the E90 chrome moustache, F30 lobotomy scar, or the G20 beaver teeth but BMW has been good at getting the proportions right and the lines running through the car. Since the E90 they've just had this one weird thing in their design, but the car overall looks good despite the weird element. The buckteeth is the most glaring of all, but the darker color hides it well.

2
soeri27•

That's what got me as well but I think it might be the shape of the touring that might make that grille work for me

Interesting video showing the whole car and front end. Some people won’t be happy about the front end but I think it looks good. Better than the 4 series/M4.
