Colonoscopy Preps

Hey Y'all, greetings from the toilet on this fine morning! I just finished my 2nd fleet enema in preparation for a flex sigmoidoscopy later this morning and I was thinking, there's so many different colonoscopy preps out there.. what have all of your experiences been? Which prep was the worst, which one do you prefer? This is my 2nd sigmoidoscopy and I've had one full colonoscopy and I've found personally i've found the enemas to be the worst, but the miralax wasn't too bad. Have any of you tried any of the ones that you get a prescription for like suprep, clenpiq, Golytely, or Gavilyte? Are they better/worse than the plain miralax?

In my opinion, Golytely and MoviPrep are the worst! The best is Miralax and Gatorade.

I’m sure they are all awful but I had suprep and I feel like that’s the one that everyone says is a special kind of hell and it really was horrible

I just had my 4th colonoscopy in about 6 years. Every time I use the suprep and I have to actively try not to throw up and make sure I take it all. It is the WORST.

Suprep tastes like sweaty cough syrup. If you know, you know.

I’ve only had 1-clenpiq or something. I had ZERO issues. I was pleasantly surprised

Seconding clenpiq, I had zero problems!

I am doing clenpiq tonight so your comments makes me feel a lot more at ease. Even the nurse said it’s not that bad.

Very tolerable! Hope you’re finding it to be the same!!!

Clenpiq was so great to me, zero cramping just liquid poops every hour for like 9 hours and then a quick water enema the morning of the colonoscopy. I've heard horror stories about some of the others though.

My prep wasn’t that bad. It was only the last day that I was pretty fed up, but that’s mostly due to stress and being hungry.

I’ve been on a very “easy” diet for more than a week prior, mostly due to feeling like crap. White bread, cheese, potatoes, rice, yoghurt, this kind of stuff. 5 days before the colonoscopy I started drinking mild laxatives, to “soften” things up a little. It was 4 days of that, then two rounds of something called Movprep, one in the evening before the day of the procedure and one in the morning like 4 hours before the colo. No food, only liquids then. It wasn’t entirely horrible, but I had to drink a litre of it in the span of 2 hours and that was the real challenge. First two glasses went down smoothly, third was a struggle, the fourth one was pretty much impossible and didn’t go down entirely (both rounds). I also had to chase each round with 1-2 litres of liquids. I am used to drinking water but good god, after that I should probably get a honorary Hydrohomie badge for exceptional efforts on the field of hydration.

The morning of the actual colonoscopy was the worst, at that point I was very hungry and pretty fed up with having to drink constantly, I just wanted to get it all over and done with. I was also pretty anxious about the procedure.

The pooping itself was completely fine actually. No straining, no cramps, and all that came out by the end of the prep was water. Like peeing out of two holes simultaneously ;)

I was awake for my procedure, got a hefty dose of relaxant but it didn’t knock me out. I spent the whole thing chatting to the doctor and nurses and admiring the view of my extremely clean colon.

As soon as I was out of there I got the biggest sandwich and cookie I could find at the hospital cafeteria.

TL;DR: neither the prep nor the colonoscopy itself was as bad as I thought it would be.

So far I've only had one colonoscopy (diagnosed like two months ago) and had Gatorade Zero with Miralax. Only managed to get half down before it started coming back up before it even hit my stomach. It sucked.

I am scheduled for a colonoscopy this afternoon and just finished the drink this morning. Good luck with yours. This will be my 14th one and I think this was has been okay in terms of the drink. I took miralax and dulcolax tablets the day before.

I prefer GoLytely to Gatorade and Miralax. It had less flavor to keep so it was easier to gag down at 3am😂I really can't stand Gatorade after using it as prep 😭

Same, but with apple juice.

It depends on the nurse doing the enema. If an endoscopy or IBD nurse does it then its mostly fine just a but crampy before passing. Non-IBD nurses aren't as good, and I had one nurse spill it when I was really sore and chafed and it was just the worst thing. Drinking prep doesn't work for me, it liquefies everything but doesn't actually make me go, which means they end up sucking it all out during the procedure.

Is doing an enema standard before a colonoscopy? I have one tomorrow morning as well as an endoscopy and they didn’t mention anything about an enema. I am doing clenpiq tonight and early tomorrow morning before my procedures.

it depends i've had one full colonoscopy and all i had to do was drink the miralax, for one sigmoidoscopy i had to drink magnesium citrate and do one enema the morning of, but for this sigmoidoscopy i didn't have to drink anything and i just had 1 enema the night before and one this morning

Suprep was annoying but not awful. Then again, I’m very used to diarrhea.

I always decline the little bottle since it costs more. I get the giant 1/2 gallon filled with miralax and lots and lots of salt. I guess a lot of people have trouble finishing it, but I am always so hungry and thirsty on a prep I chug it right down. Usually they make me drink a bottle of magnesium citrate the night before the prep too. I always have to add an extra day to my preps because my tubes are slow.
