A Pitiful Eulogy For The Man In The Jar
I strode across my dying lawn
Needed a nap, produced a yawn
An alligator banked the turn
Out hopped a woman with an urn
Her scaly rusty beat up truck
Still housed a pilot buckled up
Who is this stranger at my home
The truck dropped gear in heaving groan
"Excuse me son I mean no harm"
"My friend and I need no alarm"
"We weren't sure if a body slept"
"In this house" she said and wept
"My husband here once parked his car"
"But now he lives inside this jar"
"His brother is my skipper who"
"Said funerals are best in twos"
"And so we drove up from the Keys"
"To put ourselves and him at ease"
"This house was special to us all"
"Its chipped bricks and weathered walls"
"We do not mean to be a pest"
"But here my husband wants to rest"
I stared back with my bloodshot eyes
I was ashamed, I was so high
And here a stoic grieving wife
Bids me to usher an afterlife
And let her husband leave that jar
And lie in grass where we park cars
I said of course, my voice was hushed
And thoughtless me I said too much
"You're free to spread him on the moore"
"But please don't pour him out indoors"
