Thoughts at 11:59 PM

my days and nights are flipped.

awake during the night, tired through the day.

flipped like a pancake,

except I never eat breakfast.

maybe I should.

I become hungry during an all-nighter, I noticed.

.

but the dark is calming.

I can dream without having to close my eyes.

I look around my room and see nothing,

I look through my window and see nothing,

yet I feel like something.

I am something surrounded by nothing.

.

every now and then, a car passes by

and its amber headlights shine past my house.

that’s when I get up and pull down the blinds.

and I laugh.

isn’t it funny how there would be no light

without darkness?

.

I often ask myself if I should just try to sleep.

because if the early bird gets the worm,

what does the night owl get?

but by then, the sun has already come up.

Its late night thinking like this that I feel I write really well. The breaks in the text are kinda like the foggy feeling you get from being up that late to me. Its almost foggy and not fully formed thoughts in the mind but, you know exactly what you mean. I dig it

Thank you for reading! I am glad that effect came across to you—that's what I was trying to replicate!

I am grateful for your thoughts!

Cool and relatable poem! kind of read it in the rhythm of how an Ed Norton character might narrate to the audience in a movie like Fight Club. The sort of quick talk someone does when they have a lot on their mind, talking out loud to yourself for the sake of whoever might be listening, even if it is only yourself. Personally, I think the night owl gets the silence to quiet a busy mind that is otherwise bouncing around too much to make any solid progress! That is just me, at least.

I love your interpretation! Especially the Ed Norton bit... that's a very nice correlation! I liked your interpretation of the night owl too. Very deep!

Thank you for reading! I appreciate the support.

This is super relatable to me right now. I like how this could be applied to so many different situations (insomnia, stress, drug use, illness, etc). I like the touch-in-cheek bittersweet ending. It reads like a short story, with a beginning, middle, and end.

Thanks so much for reading! As a writer, I am glad to hear that you relate to the piece. And yes, there are many situations it can relate to.

I liked the ending too! :)

Again, thanks for the read!

Impressive. To me, this is a world encapsulated within one person's very limited, but very vivid and imaginative perspective. You don't say much, while saying so much. It's a state of delirium or madness, or maybe just exhaustion. But it's like it's forcing me to listen, it's written in a very intriguing way that suddenly cuts off, not delivering on its promise, leaving you wanting more, but by the end you realize that you merely saw a promise that was never made. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I find it just so amazing, this was a very amusing read. Well done!

Wonderful analysis! You hit it out of the park! And that's the trick, isn't it—leaving a feeling of want at the end? Well, I know that some of the best songs and music, for instance, are left unresolved... maybe that's where I get it from. ;)

Thank you very much for your thoughts! I really do appreciate all the support.

You're very welcome! Good art deserves to be appreciated, I'm glad I could understand what you were getting at, there's really so much more to it than what can be seen on the surface. Looking forward to reading more of your work! :)

so good! it reminds me of just the rhythm of being alive. sometimes it is so boring, so humdrum— and yet, there we are, still existing, still observing. And that, as you keenly described in your poem, is sometimes the beauty of life. bravo!

Very astute observations indeed! I did try to capture the existential nature and beauty of staying awake. Sometimes life isn't about being anything and is rather about being. Y'know what I mean?

Thank you for reading!

I found this relatable, my days are backwards to me as well the word usage makes it more interesting to read

Thanks for giving it a read! I am glad you enjoyed my poem. Words are key, especially when you're limited to semi-short stanzas.

Thanks again!

I love the almost narrative feel to this poem, the progressivenessbof it almost keeps me wanting to read(i wanna know whats next) I also love the simplicity of thebword choice, i wish therr were more rhyming words but the pace is already good enough to make them not feel missed, lovely poem

Thank you very much! Poetry always leaves one wanting more, doesn't it? ;)

It's a wonderful art form nonetheless. Thanks for reading!

This is a great description of reflective time, calm time, something so elusive in our culture of productivity and striving. Isn't it fascinating that you can rarely get there during the day, but night affords it. Thanks for taking me there.
