How did this game get so big so quickly?

QUESTION

I've seen games rise on the internet suddenly (Rocket League, Fortnite, and now Fall Guys). Most of them I understood. But Fall Guy, not so much. It looks incredibly fun, but I haven't had time to play it after buying it yet. So I watch Twitch etc for passive entertainment while working.

But how did this game get so big? Was there one YTer or streamer that played it and boosted it's popularity? Was it advertised heavily? Was it featured on some other popular show? It's kinda like Mario Party, which is an excellent game, but never achieved this level of streamer/internet hype popularity. I just don't get it!

A good time waster for casuals, streamers can sweat and get views on their yt highlights channels, and it was free for ps+ users.

It was free on Playstation Plus on release.

It looks like it's $19.99 on Steam. I bought it on Steam. Feeling kinda hoodwinked. Hahaha

If FG wouldn't have been a free PS+ game, it wouldn't have the success it has now.

I think children have been addicted to dress up games for a long, long time. I used to produce silly Flash games 2000 - 2010, and dressups were some of the most common requests from clients. Celebrity dressups were so cringe. Zero actual substance, just paper dolls basically. Haha

Yeah, I know the phone auto corrected the first sentence and I don't even remember what it was supposed to say.
