Showing my age here but I remember watching this when it first aired.
Same here, I lost my shit when I saw it. They’d been building up the Gladiators for weeks and they got MULKEYED.
Mulkymania is running wild!!
From what I remember, this was Dusty Rhode's (who was booking at the time), way of showing appreciation for all the Mulkey's had done for the territory. This victory got the Mulkey's into the Jim Crockett Sr. Cup Tournament, in which they were promptly eliminated during the first round.
Yep, the Mulkeys were absolutely beloved the guys in the back, to the point where the top teams would actually get into arguments over who got to work with them that night. They also had underdog cred with the live NWA crowd, so this was one big thank you to the team.
The Gladiators with Taz's ECW theme is great!
I’m usually hot/cold on Cornette, but his story about these guys on Stone Cold’s podcast was great to listen too.
I'm really not a fan of Cornette, but he is at his best when telling stories of the old NWA days.
This raises the question of what is the biggest upset in wrestling history?
Did The Brooklyn Brawler pin Triple H once? That has to take the cake. Maybe Barry Horowitz bearing Skip. 123 Kid beating Razor Ramon might be the best one because it led to the Kid being a decent star for them for awhile.
So I did some research, the Brawler pinned Triple H in a 3 on 1 handicap match when he teamed with Kaientai
Edit: After Chris Jericho interfered and attacked Triple H because of course Triple H couldn't lose a 3-1 handicap match clean
123 Kid beating Razor Ramon might be the best one
Last I checked that wasn't on the big monthly event for the world title, a month off the biggest show of the year of the promotion off a dominant champion.
Okada beating Tanahashi at New Beginning 2012 is up there, he beat the champion clean after Tanahashi had an 11 defense reign over 400 days.

The Mulkey Brothers were the defacto jobber tag team in the NWA at the time, and they would bump and sell to such a fantastic degree that they developed a great level of popularity not just with the boys who wanted to work with them each night, but the fans as well. A sarcastic remark on commentary of "Mulkeymania is running wild!" stuck, and soon these guys on the biggest tag team losing streak in history were gaining a ton of support.
Opposite this, vignettes and hype packages were being shown, promoting the debut of a team known as The Gladiators. They went the whole hog in telling people that this team was going to be a big deal, powerful monster heels who came out to War Machine by Kiss. They seemed set for a massive push.
So these two beasts step into their debut against The Mulkeys... and lose. In possibly the biggest trolljob in booking history, The Mulkeys "accidentally" get the pin and the crowd comes completely unglued.
