Donny Benet

I just came across this guy last week, and I thought I'd share it with the groovy cats at r/Bass. Donny Benet is an Australian bass player and musician, plays bass with the feel and groove of Bernard Edwards while looking like the lovechild of Bobby Vega and Danny DeVito. So many of his songs have great bass lines, here is a video of him teaching how to play one. There is a series on YouTube where he runs through how to play his songs, is a great watch for fans of the bass.

He was my last concert before covid shut everything down. Got to meet him briefly and tell him he's an awesome bassist. He was very gracious, totally nice guy.

That's awesome! I got tix to see him in Melbourne in March, however with the city currently in lockdown it's a bit of a crapshoot whether or not it will go ahead. Fingers crossed

Me too! He sang and played synth to a backing track when I saw him in NYC so no bass, but it was still great. I agree, he seems like a really good dude.

Fucking love Donny Benet, Mr Experience is an amazing album. His lines are so much fun to play!

I really like what he does, and my favourite thing is that he seems to be sincere about his music. At first glance I thought he was a comedian in the same vein as Barry Morgan (another Australian cult comedy music icon), but I was so glad to find out Donny was just a great musician who loves performing disco.

Fantastic bassist too. I was thinking about seeing if I could get hold of him for an AMA at some stage, but our timezones are a bit of a shit for the main traffic of the sub, and he is kinda niche.

Yeah at first glance he seems like a bit of a meme but his music is actually legit and his bass playing is tight as fuck. Also singing and playing bass live like he does is no joke, he's a real talent. Would be 100% down for an AMA if you do one though

That's the art of doubling-down and owning your shit. Obviously there's a bit of tongue-in-cheek, self-aware, self-deprecating humor here, but he clearly isn't making a joke of the thing. How else would you as a middle-aged, unfit, balding bass player make disco digestible to a modern audience? He's just owning the persona and it's working. Oh boy, is it working. haha

I recently came across his stuff and it is a real joy to listen to. I'm planning on learning some of his songs because they seem like a lot of fun.

I went to the Sydney Conservatory of Music studying Jazz here in Australia, “Donny” was a year below me. Beastly player! He’s just as good on upright bass as he is on electric bass too. Has 2 brothers that are also very talented musicians

Nice fretless Stingray!

He popped up on my YouTube feed a few weeks ago, and now I’m hooked...

Absolutely. Same thing here. The bass sound on the song "Second Dinner" made me immediately look at Stingrays for sale.

I really want his last two albums on vinyl and I hope they press them again at some point.

Definitely one of my favorite bassists.

He needs to do a collaboration with Barry Morgan. The sexually energy could save the world.

Mr Experience is the jam! I mean anyone who writes a song called “second dinner” is a champion of the people in my book

That tone, goddamn.

Man I saw that a few weeks ago and I have to say that fretless stingray is yummy. I've always wanted one. He also has some very nice synths.

I've seen him in Melbourne 3 times and each one was one of my favourite gigs I've been to
