Day 555 and I Beat Diabetes!!

Today is day 555 sober! I was diagnosed with diabetes 3 months ago. I thought giving up alcohol was hard but then I had to give up carbs too! I have quit so many things in my life. I quit alcohol on March 22nd, 2019 and then on June 12, 2020 I was diagnosed as a diabetic! I gave up alcohol and then I had to give up carbs too? Withdrawals from carbs are kinda like alcohol as it is like the flu! What the hell! I did it though and as of this week when I saw my dr I am not a diabetic anymore! I had an A1C of 11.4 in June and in Sept. my A1C was 5.6! Diabetes was harming my liver and kidneys too but today they are normal and I am on cloud nine! My health is more important than any carb or alcohol!

Awesome! Did you lose weight too? My Dr. actually left me a voicemail after my last bloodwork as the changes were significant. It is a really rewarding feeling! Stay strong!

Congratulations! I'm hoping to follow your path. My A1C dropped from 6.4 to 6.1 after just a month of no alcohol. I've been on a low carb diet for several years now but the only thing that has helped has been not drinking. Your story inspires me to keep going!

Getting sober did not help me as far as diabetes. I was dianosed after a year of not drinking. It was my carb addiction that took me down but I am sure drinking all those years prior helped set the stage!

That's amazing! I went from an a1c of 10.8 to 4.7 in six months but it took bariatric surgery and a 150 pound weight loss to accomplish! Like you, however, I maintain a low carb diet, especially now that the beer is a thing of the past.

So congratulations on both of your accomplishments! And here's to the next 555 days of sobriety!

Thanks for this. Carbs are next for me too as I am a new diabetic as well. seems like too much sometimes. I guess too much is what got me to this place.

Thank you! I worked hard but was a little resentful as I thought I quit drinking and now I have to give up carbs too?

No, you said it best.

My health is more important than any carb or alcohol!

P.S. As well as going no booze, I also had to do dairy free and gluten free. I had the same pangs over giving up my beloved udon noodles!

Yes, me too so you know my pain! I am sugar, gluten and dairy free also! I had been for a year before I quit drinking but there are other flours out there and I made homemade pasta. Have a ton of cassava flour frozen for maybe one day.......

Forgot to mention that I was diagnosed as being pre-diabetic. Diet changes (booze and food) reversed that, so yay us for making good changes! We're both kicking ass.

Great; no more Metformin for you.

Yes! My dr had me on the lowest dose of ozempic which is one shot a week. After my 3rd shot I quit it. No meds is the way to go!

Congrats on each of those accomplishments! Each of those achievements is remarkable on it’s own and you’re putting them together. Keep owning it!

Thanks! I came to realize I loved my cornbread and egg noodles more than alcohol! Then I had to quit them but I survived! Lol

Good job! I had a similar situation and as of 2 months ago I am no longer insulin dependent but still take a pill. It took a lot of hard work for me so I know yhe effort you put into it! IWNDWYT!

I just was posting about this the other day. I’m in the exact same path.

I just got diagnosed a month ago. It was one of the things that moved me to try again. I am so glad to hear you are doing so well!

amdeterminedOP698 days•

You can turn it around too!

That's my plan! Now that I'm all stabilized on meds, my next appointment is in early December, and I plan to shock my doc.
