Wow. New Game-Changer: Self-Swaddling?

CPTSD Victory

[TW: generalized mention of SH]

I have been feeling absolutely wretched lately. Just a bundle of bad nerves, grinding my teeth down to nubs, pacing around, having dangerous thoughts about hurting my body, anxious about everything, breathing shallowly, thoughts racing from one thing to the next, just cycling through fight or flight for days.

Well, I just threw myself down on the bed, and rolled myself up in the tightest burrito I could with my blanket in an attempt to implode, and suddenly just... relaxed. I just immediately felt more calm and my muscles relaxed enough to take a big, long belly breath. I guess all the pressure against my body did something? I dunno. But literally instantly, my breathing slowed and deepened and my muscles relaxed and all of my thoughts just evaporated, and I fell asleep.

I never just fall asleep. It takes me two hours every night lying in bed to finally conk out. I haven't just fallen asleep upon lying down in as long I can remember.

I woke up 15 minutes later relaxed and refreshed and calm.

I guess this is the appeal with weighted blankets? Maybe I have sensory issues? I don't know. Whatever that was, I am definitely going to be turning to this again in the future.

One of my friends has wrapped me (and other friends of ours) up in blanket burritos and it really does feel nice.

I agree that weighted blankets are good too. I love the feeling of that kind of comforting pressure on me too. I’ve also used weighted sandbags in yoga classes (I really like those).

Holy shit I'm trying this tonight.

My kid has sensory issues, she's extremely sensitive in every imaginable way. It makes her very loving and caring, but also makes it hard for her to handle her anxiety at times. We all know how that goes. She's coming into her teen years and she loves it when I just lay on top of her. I'm about 100 pounds heavier. She loves to put her arms around me and squish my squishy body parts. She loves how the smush feeling feels.

I'll see how she feels about a super burrito.

And then I'm making one for myself.

Look into the 'bed sock' they might also really like that!

Haha, best of luck, and let us know how it goes!

Weighted blankets give us that "grounded" feel and are extremely helpful to some with anxiety especially the way you described! I would look into it! Walmart sells them or amazon, easy to obtain one. It's like a big hug but from a blanket lol. I absolutely love blankets and they're a huge comfort item for me!

I do this with my dog all the damn time. She was abused and gets really hypervigilant and anxious. I pop her in a pupperito and she has no choice but to chill. I think it's the same idea as a thundershirt.

And god damn I love my weighted blanket.

I bought a weighted blanket about 4 months ago and sleep with it every night. I've been digging into a lot of stuff lately and get really paranoid/scared/emotionally exhausted if it goes on too long. I've been just going to my bed and throwing the weighted blanket over myself and it calms me down fast. I got the 30lb one (I'm a big guy, and it's a king size blanket to cover the whole bed) and i'll fold it if I'm really anxious so that it's two layers on top of me.

I highly recommend getting one if this seems to help you. I got the Quility Premium one from Amazon and I have no complaints. It's not cheap, but to me it was a worthwhile expense.
