Movement keybinds in arena?

Question

Hi all,

I'm a trash player, wanting to improve. I realize that one of the many things holding me back is not having easy to reach keybinds for all the focus/targeting macros, and I just end up clicking arena frames instead. This obviously makes me miss my crucial interrupts, CCs, etc. I'm using WASD for movement right now, but I'd like to change this come the prepatch, and utilize these newfound keybinds. I'm left-handed (mouse in left hand), and they don't make Razer Nagas and Corsair Scimitars for us, so my options are much more limited in this department than for right-handed people.

My question is, is there a general consensus on how one should be moving in arenas? Holding left+right mouse buttons for movement is no problem for me, what I'm worried about is not having strafe left and strafe right for those moments when you need to peek from behind a pillar to cast an instant ability. Turning left with the mouse, moving out from the pillar, turning right to face the target of my instant cast, then turning right to move back behind the pillar feels incredibly clunky for me - but if this is the way forward, I'll start getting accustomed to it.

What about you guys? Is there an "optimal" way?

I'm pretty sure they do make left-handed nagas: https://www.razer.com/gaming-mice/razer-naga-left-handed-edition/RZ01-03410100-R3M1

Strafing is very important, since you can still cast while facing 90 degrees away from your target, I'd be surprised if many top tier players played without strafe bindings. You can safely unbind turning, and backpedal if you never pve tank. In the end most people play with WAD or WQE for forward/strafe.

Sadly, that naga isn't available in Europe yet but I'm on their notification list.

This is what I expected to hear, thanks for your reply!

Is it not possible for you to use left hand on keyboard? I've known even left handed people use the mouse in the right hand.

As for moving, as long as you're using your mouse to move/turn, and keyboard to strafe/move forward... That's about all there is to it.

I tried, but I'm 37, too old to change a 30 year old habit :) Thanks for the reply!

You can put strafe on your mouse thumb buttons it's very intuitive after a bit of practice

Just unbind backpeddle, you still want to have strafe keys to peek in and out if corners. Hold right mouse button and forwardnor strafe to turn

I don't buy that universally unbinding backpeddling is necessary or even a good idea. At least the classes/specs I've played, I've never been so pressed for keybinds that I need my S key for a keybind, there's always some other keybind I can use.

Depending on your class/spec, backpeddle can be useful. For instance, on windwalker monk, having backpeddle is actually important because sometimes you want to backstep a tiny bit while channeling fists of fury without having to turn your camera 90 or 180 degrees which has a chance of making you miss out on important damage.

Only caster I've played is mage, and based on my experience there I think most/all casters can safely unbind backpeddle.

I guess that's fair, I only play casters and healers. My main is mage and I need keybinds where ever I can get them (no extra mouse buttons). I have everything from ~ to 5, q to y, a to h, and z to b with shift modifiers bound. Mousewheel up and down, and some keys with ctrl modifiers. S is one of my most valuable keybinds for frozen orb and ring of frost

Not sure about "optimal", but I use a Razer Lancehead so I have strafe, jump, mount, sprint, back camera, and yes backpedal all on my mouse. It's an ambidextrous mouse, so the side buttons on the left and right both share a bind by default. Since you can program those side buttons, I switched up the ones on the right so they would be separate from the ones on the left.

bind z and x to your strafing. That frees up WASD. Most people just unbind S for backpedal, freeing up only one bind.

i just re-bind A and D to strafe and unbind backpaddle (S)
