r/thriftstorehauls Rules

Pinned

I think some people might now know how to get to our rules. A lot of people use mobile which sometimes tends to hide the link to view the sidebar. To make things easier, here they are. tl;dr at the bottom. If you have questions about any of the rules (clarification, or angry we wont let you sell stuff here, please leave a comment)

Also, not that this is pinned and easily accessible to EVERYONE, and you can comment here to double triple check you are okay with your post, there should be no excuses.

What type of haul is okay to post?

  • Anything that comes from a place where the prices are thrifty (e.g. garage sales, estate sales, flea markets, craigslist, street corners, etc.).

  • Not allowed: Department stores (clearance items, sales, etc), online stores (eBay, Poshmark, Depop, etc), hand-me-downs, or anything similar, Plato's Closet (or other clothing resellers).

Link posts:

##Text posts:

  • For everything else. Posts should contain content in the main body. Please remain on topic and include visual content if posting about a recent find.

  • Title your post with some relevant info. If you seem to be seeking info only,** it will be removed**.

  • No buying/selling

  • eBay links are not allowed for any reason with no exceptions. Most marketplace or social media links are also not allowed.

  • Promotion of items or services (in a comment/post) that anyone stands to make monetary/social profit with is forbidden. This includes eBay, marketplaces, YouTube, referrals, social media, etc.

  • Do not make multiple posts in a short time-span, please combine your images into one album and submit them all at once.

  • Vulgar insults, sexual harassment, and any other form of unwarranted toxicity towards the community will not be tolerated. Please show some common courtesy.

We reserve the right to remove posts/comments that we feel abuse the spirit of the subreddit or its rules, as well as ban on the first bannable offense without warning. Assume breaking any rule is bannable

Please contact the mods for our removal reasoning if you feel like your content removal or ban was unjustified.

tl;dr

What were you expecting? more compacted rules?

Notice lots of look at me type selfie’s of like a dress but all we see is close up of face and maybe half of the dress 🙄at least 2 or 3 over the weekend

this weekend was a bit crazy due to Halloween. I was a little more relaxed with the enforcement, however I only got to the removal of posts Sunday evening. so some of what you saw was probably removed.

that being said, rule changes are coming in the near future.

i just want to clarify we can not buy and sell at all

22
humanman42OP•

To the point where we remove comments saying "would you be interested in selling".

that's not what we want for this sub at all. plenty of other places on reddit, and the internet you can do that.

This. I like this rule.

Once you allow people to start making money in a place, it's straight downhill from there.

Also know video posts. I'm in a few subs where that just gets abused by Youtube Spammers who don't care about contributing, only taking from the community.

Thanks for the quick response.

not a problem.

Could you point me towards any other subs where I can do that? Not trying to start a fuss or anything, just curious.

Can I post things I found on the streets?

7
humanman42OP•

yup

monicarm•

Hey, can I make a post asking for help? I thrifted a skirt and I’m looking for tips on how to remove a glue stain from it

4
humanman42OP•

in a text post yes. not a image post.

7
monicarm•

Alright, thanks!

I've noticed this community is having an up-tick of posts asking others to identify or research such as, ".... any info on this "X" item? Year, Make, Model?" Most do not share the research efforts they have put forth.

Perhaps we can preserve the awesome sub 'spirit' if research posts state knowledge the OP obtained in order for the community to build upon.

Moderators -- Thanks for keeping this a great place on Reddit. You are appreciated.

3
humanman42OP•

We have a rule against seeking inform in the title of the post. Currently we are busy and it may take a little longer for us to remove them, but they will usually get removed.

2
DesertSong-LaLa•

OK -- Thanks for your reply and know that you all are appreciated.

2
humanman42OP•

thanks. after the week I had, it truly does meen a lot.

also, read the rules, report the rule breakers. it helps.

4
AtWarWithEurasia•

What about those "catch and release" posts? They're technically not a haul.

2
humanman42OP•

Back when we were a small sub we did not require the purchasing of the item to show it off. It was effectively grandfathered in as okay. It may change here in the next couple months.

Are facebook marketplace finds allowed?

2
humanman42OP•

yes

2
DorisGetsHerOats•

Could someone please inform the community on the definition/parameters of ‘retro’, ‘vintage’, and ‘antique’? (Google has many articles on the subject.)

2
humanman42OP•

No. It would be wasted effort trying to educate people on what those terms mean. People break the rules all the time, putting more text on the sidebar would just make less people read them

Are we allowed to ask questions about other means of vintage shopping, or solely related to thrift store shopping? Thanks. :)

1
humanman42OP•

sort of depends on the context. thrift/flea market/garage sale/some online places (craigslist, fb) and some others are all fine in pretty much any way.

consignment, or ebay not so much. talking about them in general depending on the question could be fine. posting stuff from them here is not okay.

3
Daddys_Milk•

I was hoping to ask specifically for advice on how to find estate sales in my area so I take it that’s a no-go. 😅

2
humanman42OP•

Nope, that is fine. There is a line between thrift/retail(ish) stuff. Consignment type shopping is not allowed on this sub, estate states/garage sales are find.

3
Daddys_Milk•

Oh, great, thanks so much!

1
twilightbarker•

Genuinely curious, could you explain why something like Craigslist or FB marketplace is allowed but eBay or Poshmark is not (since you often get thrifty prices there)? And would the Etsy "vintage" section be acceptable? Thank you!

2
humanman42OP•

ebay, poshmark, and etsy you are ordering something online. fb market, Craigslist you are (almost always) buying from a person in person.

2
twilightbarker•

Thank you for replying. Got it.

when I am in a new area, I use Google maps and search for "thrift" "consignment" "antique" "pawn". usually does pretty good. Then depending on how many oop up I'll ask workers there if there are any thrift stores or stores like that around the area

2
Cymerryma•

Omg! I can confirm their deliciousness, teehee.

Why am i not allowed to post?..just tried to post twice & get a message ..post has been removed by moderators b/c???? no reason. i did not curse, it was a simple pic of shoes....wth?

1
lionsrawrr•

u/humanman42 request to allow crossposting?

1
tdi4u•

Is it ok to make a post to ask a question? I have noticed something in my area. I read a lot, all kinds of books. I need to be able to get paperbacks for about 50 cents a piece or less to be able to afford my habit. Thrift stores used to be a great source for books in that price range. Lately they have far less selection, not as much shelf space devoted to books, and the books they do have are 2 or 3 bucks apiece. Im just wondering if other people are seeing the same thing

1
humanman42OP•

Generally, if it is directly thrift store related ("are the price of books going up and selection doing down at your local thrift store") then it is fine. If it skews from that "where can I get cheap books other than thrift stores?", then no.

1
tdi4u•

Ok. Thanks.

1
AfroGurl•

Do items won at auctions that aren't eBay count? I've been finding lots of cool things at my local auction house since they transitioned to online only.

1
humanman42OP•

Nope. Sorry. I have only been to one auction ever, it was really entertaining. Just didn't have the patients to wait for the item I wanted to bid on. Haha

1
AfroGurl•

Understand! It's much easier from home, I just set an alarm for 5-10 minutes before bidding closes and swoop in!

1
etsucky•

genuine question, are stores like ross considered department stores or are they considered like thrift? i guess it's not the same since they get content not from random donations but like retail outlet stuff but i'd just like to know where they stand! thanks :)

1
humanman42OP•

Department store. To me, it is basically a whole store of sale items.

1
etsucky•

ok thanks!
