Reminder: World Half Championships Saturday

Elite Discussion

Reminder that the world half championships in Poland will be going on tomorrow. Limited entry as several countries (US, Canada, Japan, Australia, others) did not send teams and several key runners either chose not to participate (Mo), withdrew late (Hassan), or are injured (Kamworor).

However, it should still be fast.

The women's field has the 4 women who have broken some version of the half record (women only or mixed) in the past couple years. Yeshaneh and Gudeta from ETH; Jepchirchir and Jepkosgei from KEN. Those will be the heavy favorites, so watch how the other athletes from those countries run in the start. I expect some team gamemanship in this race.

The men's field has solid teams from ETH and KEN, as expected, but also the Ugandan group headlined by 5000 and 10000 WR holder Cheptegei and don't sleep on Kiplimo making his debut too. Kandie will be the KEN favorite, Lots of talent in this race, so it could turn out a lot of ways. I expect Cheptegei to take it out hard and see who can hang on.

Loved seeing the calling out of Mo Farrah 🤣

I'll be curious if Mo ducks him at Tokyo next year. Cheptegei will likely double and force the issue though.

From a British perspective, looking forward to seeing what Jake Smith can do. He is 22 y/o and ran a 28:00 flat 10,000m time trial during lockdown.

I've not heard of him before, but the boy did good!

He did! Improved his own British U23 record, claimed the Welsh record (beating Steve Jones) and moved to third all time Brit behind Farah and Hawkins.

Hoping he can continue his development further and be a championship medal contender in a few years.

Does anyone know the best way to watch this in the US? I saw it looked like BBC Sport may have a streaming link?

I also saw reference to it being on the Olympic Channel, but when I go to their website, I don't see it.

You can probably still participate in the virtual edition of this race tomorrow if you register here.

I was able to catch up on the World Half Championships results late yesterday. All I have to say is...

...Uganda be kidding me!

(I will now see myself out)

Thanks for the reminder! Had forgotten to actually put it in my calendar. I assume it is too much to hope for another WR?

Not the flattest course, so I’ll be pretty surprised if it winds up being a WR. Wouldn’t be shocked if Cheptegei takes it out on pace for it though, since he’s probably the only one in the field who has a shot at it.
