Boston ADU Experiances

Housing/Real Estate 🏘️

Anyone have a recent experience adding an ADU in Boston?

The rules were loosed up, a guidebook was published. Has anyone gone through the new process and can report on how smooth it went?

We are debating replacing the garage, and would be interested in converting it.

US Trials Sponsors

General Discussion

The US Trials finished up and I thought it would be interesting to see what companies are actually sponsoring the successful athletes. So I pulled the sponsor data from each athlete who finished top 3 in their event. That leaves 120 athletes.

Some notes:

1 - I just pulled top three regardless of if they actually got selected for the team.

2 - I rolled together different teams from the same company (Nike - Bowerman is just Nike).

3 - I did include the marathon. I did not include race walking. Sorry, not sorry.

4 - I gave credit to what USATF put on the sheets. For unattached athletes, I then checked their socials for any indication of other sponsorship (NIL, other company, whatever)

US Olympic Trials start tomorrow at (where else but...) Eugene. They will extend all the way to the 30th. Here are some of my random thoughts, add your own below.

Note - in the marathon, the US could move someone up to take the spot of a different qualified athlete. You can't do that on the track. If you are top 3, but not qualified, you don't go. For most events, this will not be an issue.

10,000 m - This is the even that the above could be an issue. The men's final will be tomorrow night and only Fisher, Young, and Kincaid have the auto-time and Chelimo is in the quota. Mantz or Chelanga could possibly move up enough if they win in a fast enough time. It will likely be hot and

Trials are this weekend.

Currently we are sitting on 214 declared entries for the men and 165 for the women. Vast majority qualified via the full marathon, but 8 men and 12 women qualified via the half. One Abdi qualified by being on the Tokyo team.

The 2016 and 2020 Trials were entertaining - solid races with the drama of the top 3 going to the Olympics. However, the writers are lazy and subject to a lack of originality. By looking at the previous results we can identify the common tropes and use them to predict this weekend's outcomes. I have done that for you:

To be the best, you have to beat the best.

Earlier this month, the window for the Japanese Marathon Grand Championship closed. It is the Japanese system for selecting the Olympic team that they debuted for the Tokyo Olympics. As a fan of racing, I 100% support selecting the team based on a head to head race. That said, there are some differences between the US Trials and the MGC.

One note - the top 3 MGC runners are not guaranteed a spot. There is a second window after the MGC that someone can run a fast time and steal the spot of the third finisher. This year, it has been announced those times would be 2:05:50 for the men, 2:21:41 for the women. Before Tokyo, the third spot for the women was stolen twice.

The big diffe

Anyone have experience with exercise induced asthma and racing?

My niece was diagnosed with it last XC season and it got her again yesterday in her season debut. It didn't seem to be much of a problem in track, though she was purely a miler and never raced longer. She says workouts are fine, though some hit her harder in the heat and humidity.

She's heading back to the doctor for potential updates in her meds, so this isn't for medical advice, but how to handle it.

I vaguely remember some guys doing some hard work an hour before races to try and trigger theirs. Then they'd take their inhaler and be fine in the race. But that was 20 years ago, not sure if that is still a strategy. Doe

For those that don't know me, I'm a 41 year old guy, 6 foot tall, and my scale broke, but I am probably 183-5 for this race. I ran track and XC in high school and was mediocre/decent (16:xx XC; 10:20/4:50/2:02). Did my first full in college (3:02), then got fat in grad school and my 20s. At some point, I did a charity 5k at a girlfriend's request. I went through the 2 mile mark at 16:30 and remember thinking "HS me would be done". A little bit later, I decided to get back in shape. Is there a way to get notified when your deposit clears and the buying power is added?

I tend to deposit relatively small amounts, so it is hard to pick up if a deposit clears or it is just daily fluctuation of my account. Pre-GME they would give you the option of instantly adding the BP, but that is gone now.

If you buy crypto in tastyworks, it will be stored in a custodial hot wallet at Zero Hash. You cannot pull the coins out of the wallet to use or store else where. Nor can you transfer coins into the wallet.

Someone big into crypto will say "not your keys, not your coins" and find this unacceptable.

Someone dabbling in it will probably not care.

Either way, I feel people should know so they can invest accordingly.

Breaking 2 data

Elite Discussion

This has been making the rounds, but in case anyone hasn't seen it or wants to discuss it I will post it.

The team behind Nike's Breaking 2 released a bunch of the data they collected in testing the potential athletes before choosing the team for the attempt.

Spring/summer is rolling up on us in the northern hemisphere. With that, comes the brutally fun reminder that heat and humidity are things.

There are plenty of ways to adjust, including my personal favorite of "ignore it until you can't". The link above goes to what I consider a pretty reasonable and quick method of anticipating the effect on pace.

Basically add temp (in F) and dew point. Adjust as follows:

100 or less:   no pace adjustment

101 to 110:   0% to 0.5% pace adjustment

111 to 120

I don't think we're going to be seeing new race reports for awhile. So let's get some old school ones going.

This is the story of my debut marathon, Chicago 2000.

Times were different then. We survived a bug that we would thought would destroy the world; Abdi Abdirahman was a surprise Olympian. Just different man.

I was 20 and a sophomore in college. I had ran throughout high school and was decent, but not good (2:02/4:50/10:15, low 16s XC). As a freshman, I wasn't really running but remaining active. When spring hit, a couple floormates and I started to get out fairly consistently. I was going to spend the summer at home interning for the DOT, so I decided it would be a good time
