How to turn DW 3002/7002 double pedals into 2 single pedals for $20.
I started with a pair of DW 3002 pedals on a Yamaha DTX550K electronic kit and found that the linkage was too loose for my liking; it just felt floppy. I priced out another KP65 kick tower/sensor for $70 and figure that I might as well see if I could convert the 3002s into 2 separate pedals. (You'll need to do some research on kick towers if you have an electronic kit. The KP65, which came with my kit, has an in port on the back, allowing me to daisy chain 2 together.)
I tried pulling them apart to move the auxiliary beater hub from the right pedal to the left but the bearings won't come out, even after all the screws have been removed. I suspect that they are held in place with Loctite.
Doing some digging online shows that the DW 3000 pedals are rebadged DW 7000 pedals. A little more digging turned up the schematics for the primary pedal. (Schematics for secondary pedal.) The beater hub, part SP1303 is all that's needed. I ordered it from my local music store for $17 and change.
After about 2 months (according to the store, DW is really slow with replacement parts), it finally arrived and I set it up. I attached the beater hub to the left of the sprocket on the auxiliary pedal, moved the spring assembly, and moved part SP1208 to the right of the post on the auxiliary pedal.
This is fully reversable; I just need to move the spring assembly and SP1208 back and, optionally, remove the beater hub from the auxiliary pedal. It should also work well with the left-handed variant of the pedals with a few common sense changes to the instructions.
It looks like everything is working fine and it feels a lot better than it used to; I just need to configure the MIDI box to treat the second pedal as a bass drum instead of crash cymbal. One complication I've run into is that my kit came with a crappy 3-legged hi-hat stand that doesn't rotate; I need to replace it with a 2-legged stand. (If I ever move to an accoustic kit with 2 bass drums, I expect I'll need to buy a legless hi-hat stand.) The 3-legged stand works with double pedals, but it's far from ideal; anyone looking to use this kit with double pedals should consider that they may need to get a new hi-hat stand.
This conversion isn't for everyone but it could be useful for a few people out there. I'll try to answer any questions.
