Does anybody have experience buying a vehicle out of state?

I need to buy a vehicle and buying in Texas seems to be where I will have the most options for what I want. What should I expect? Am I better off just waiting for what I want to become available in Louisiana?

Just get a bill of sale and have both it and the title stamped by a notary.

And if it is through a dealer they'll take care of all of it. When I lived in TN I bought a car in NC and wasn't any different than in state (minus something they took care of with tax)

Does that need to happen in Louisiana or does it matter?

Don’t matter

The notary needs to witness the seller signing it in case that wasn’t obvious

Cool, this the kind of thing I’m looking for. Thank you.

You still need to pay sales tax on the car when you register it in Louisiana. Even if you have owned the car in another state for years. If you bought it recently, they give you credit for about 4% of the tax you pay out of state. If you pay 8% in Texas and 10% here that's effectively a 14% tax on the car.

Not a huge amount of extra money for a $5,000 car. But if you are thinking about getting a $50,000 car well you can do the math.

Bought my last car out of state, dealership handled everything and I got my plates in the mail.

Looking to do the same. Price is my reason, what were you considering?

3rd or 4th generation 4Runner or Tacoma crew cab that isn’t 15k.

Make sure you check the frame for rot. A lot of rusty Toyotas get shipped down south from the rust belt assuming we won't check for damage from salt and snow. When I was looking those that seemed like a bargain had major rust. You probably already know about the frame recall on these too. That said there are some good dry trucks out there. Even better go to New Mexico.

You're gonna have trouble finding a 2nd gen tacoma with less than 200k miles for that price much less a 2016+ 3rd gen

Yea, I'm finding that out. That's part of why I'm looking in Texas and why I'm not stuck on the Tacoma. Used vehicles are so expensive right now it hurts. If I had the credit I would just buy new and sell it when I got sick of paying the note because they just don't lose that much value.

If you are not buying from a dealership and you need plate to drive it back to LA with, ABC Title can get everything together for you.

Bought a car in Iowa.

  • Pay some taxes at the dmv there, got a temp plate in order to drive to LA.
  • once in LA, I went to the DMV and registered the car. I had to pay taxes again, but was I already pay in Iowa was deducted.

I bought a truck in Texas last year. Unless it’s a lease you will have a tax bill when you go to register.
